Product Datasheet - Metal Treatment

ALBRAL
Reducing Covering and Cleaning Agents
Product Description ALBRAL are covering and cleaning fluxes for aluminium bronzes and special brasses
containing alloying elements that are prone to oxidation such as aluminium, manganese and
silicon. Due to their high affinity for oxygen, these alloying elements readily form oxides that
can contaminate the melt and produce heavy dross with a high metal content.

If present in the melt during solidification these oxides segregate at the grain boundaries
considerably reducing mechanical properties. ALBRAL is used to avoid these disadvantages - it
greatly reduces the formation of oxides and heavy dross and at the same time forms a
protective cover that prevents gas absorption by the metal.

Benefits ALBRAL D2 / ALBRAL GB2 has exceptionally good oxide-dissolving properties.

Application Sufficient ALBRAL is added as soon as the metal starts to melt so that the melt surface is
completely covered. Approximately 5 minutes before casting, an additional 0.25 kg of ALBRAL
can be added slowly by immersing it to the bottom of the crucible and then stirring in
thoroughly to bring it into close contact with the melt. If necessary the liquid dross can be
thickened using SLAX 20.

Type Casting process Melting point Dross Furnace type

ALBRAL D2 Sand Crucible furnace with
855° Liquid
ALBRAL GB2 casting open burner flame
ALBRAL D3 Die
840° Dry Holding furnace, bale-out furnace
ALBRAL GB3 casting

Crucible care:
Always carefully clean any residues from crucible walls before refilling to get the best lifetime
of Foseco crucibles.

Addition Rate Approximately 1% of the total metal weight for ALBRAL D2 / ALBRAL GB 2 and ALBRAL D3 /
ALBRAL GB 3. Either the complete quantity can be added or only sufficient amount to ensure
that the melt surface is completely covered by the flux. The remainder can then be added
approximately 5 minutes before casting as detailed above.
As the required addition rates depend to a great extent on the prevailing foundry conditions
(melting type, metal) only approximate addition rates are given. As a rule, less is needed than
the quantity listed above.
