SITA RAMA LIFT IRRIGATION PROJECT

 The erstwhile Government of Andhra Pradesh initiated Rajiv Dummugudem Lift

Irrigation Scheme(RDLIS), Indira Sagar Rudramkota Lift Irrigation
Schemes(ISRLIS).
 In view of the major bottlenecks and issues in both the schemes, the
Government of Telangana have decided to modify the above two schemes and
integrate them in to a single project to suit the ground conditions and irrigation
requirement of Khammam district.
 After detailed consultations with the Experts and Engineers, Sita Rama Lift
Irrigation Project(SRLIP) has been planned by merging RDLIS and ISRLIS to
create irrigation potential of 5 lakh acres in Khammam district. While planning
the SRLIP, due care has been taken to ensure that the expenditure incurred
earlier on RDLIS & ISRLIS remains useful to the maximum extent possible in the
integrated project proposal. In addition, the motors and pumps and other
electromechanical items procured for these schemes are now being proposed to
be used in other schemes such as Bhaktha Ramadasu LI Scheme in Khammam
Dist. The Chief Engineer’s of other on-going/new LI Schemes in Telangana are
being addressed to examine the utilisation of motors and pumps that suit the
characteristics of their projects.
 Keeping in view of the above and for optimum utilization of water, the
Government of Telangana have accorded Administrative approval for the work
of Construction of Integrated (Rajiv Sagar & Indira Sagar) Dummugudem Lift
Irrigation Project which is now named as “ Sita Rama Lift irrigation Project
 The proposed Sita Rama Lift Irrigation project is to draw water from Godavari
River on upstream of existing Dummugudem Anicut. The Dummugudem Anicut
is located at Dummugudem Village & Mandal
20Kms upstream of Bhadrachalam town on river Godavari in Khammam district at
17°52’26” N and 80°53’6” E.
SALIENT FEATURES OF PROJECT :
 Location : Intake on upstream of Dummugudem Anicut
 Source : River Godavari

 Discharge at head : 259.88 cumecs (9000 cusecs)

 Cropping Pattern : Khariff ID

 Length of Approach Channel : 10.50 KM

 Length of Gravity Canal : 457.00 KM

 No. of Pumping Stations : 5 Nos.

 Length of Pressure Main : 10.50 KM

 No. of Balancing Reservoirs : 4 Nos

SCOPE OF WORK :
The Project has been planned to draw 259.88 Cumecs (9,000 Cusecs) of water from
Godavari River at El. +45.00 M for a length of 10.50Km. Thereafter water will be lifted
at BG Kotturu village from EL. +43.60 M to EL. +67.10 M and then water will be flowing
through a gravity canal of 29.20 Km. Then, the water will be lifted at Koyagutta from
EL +63.00 M to +110.00 M and then water will be flowing through a gravity canal of 21
Km. The water then will be lifted at Kamalapuram from EL. +108 m to EL. +160 m and
EL. +200 m, where the canal at RL.+160 m is bifurcated in to two branches.
The first branch will cover Rajiv Sagar area and the second branch will cover Indira
Saga area. The gravity canal at EL. +200 m (Right) after lift from Kamalapuram will
cover area of Indira Sagar ayacut. Under this scheme it is also proposed to stabilize the
ayacut of about 80,000 Acres under DBM 60 of SRSP Stage-II Command through
Bayyaram Tank.
It is also proposed to improve the capacities of
1) Rollapadu tank from existing capacity of 0.175 TMC to 10.61 TMC,

2) Bayyaram reservoir from 0.400 TMC to 1.50 TMC,

3) Forming a new balancing tank at Jaganadhapuram (v) (Lingasamudram tank) with a

capacity of 0.240 TMC.

4) Palavagu Cheruvu improvement near Chennuvarigudem(v) to a capacity of 0.03

TMC.

ADVANTAGES OF SITA RAMA LIFT IRRIGATION PROJECT:

 The alignment of Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project (SRLIP) avoids Kinnerasani
Wild Life Sanctuary and its eco sensitive zone.

 The alignment of SRLIP will cross railway lines at very few places against too
many railway crossings in earlier RDLIS alignment.

 The alignment of SRLIP is not interfering with Ash pond area of KTPS and runs
away from Palvoncha town, where as the alignment of RDLIS running very close
to Palvoncha Town and interfering with Ash pond area of KTPS.

 The alignment of SRLIP runs in Telangana state only avoiding interstate issues
with state of Andhra Pradesh as was the case in ISRLIS where in the head works
of ISRLIS located in the administrative boundary of the residual Andhra
Pradesh.

 Administrative difficulties in O & M of canal system between two adjacent

states and may lead to Inter State issues is avoided in SRLIP scheme.

 While designing SRLIP, due care has been taken to utilize the expenditure
incurred on RDLIS & ISRLIS to the maximum extent possible
 The length of pressure main is restricted to 10.50 Kms. against the pressure
main length of 77.00 Kms in the earlier projects i.e., RDLIS & ISRLIS.
The new alignment of project will irrigate the upland areas viz.,
Tirumalayapalem (M), Kusumanchi (M), Nelekondapally and Mudigonda (M)
which are not covered in earlier projects. The number of pump houses
proposed in SRLIP are only 5 No’s against 10 No’s in earlier projects and reduce
post project maintenance problems.

 In case of availability of additional water during a good year, the SRLIP will also
serve/ supplement several existing medium irrigation projects such as Paleru,
Wyra and Lanka Sagar Projects.

 The storage facilities provided in the RDLIS & ISRLI schemes is about 1.00 TMC
where as in SRLIP, the storage capacity of Tanks are increased to 12.38 TMC
which will be a cushion in case of any break downs in the lifting system.

 Meet the requirement of water for both domestic and industrial growth due to
creation of new districts.

 The water allocated to Palair and Wyra reservoirs under Mission Bhagiratha can
be fed from SRLIP, as these reservoirs are not receiving sufficient inflows even
to satisfy their own ayacut at present.
