Explanation Of Electrical
Components For Evaporators

 Electrical box has a terminal strip inside for line voltage wiring, wiring to
the triggers on the condensing unit, and either SMX controls or 3 knob
controls. It is remote mounted with a 3 foot wiring harness.

 High efficiency blower has a permanent split capacitors motor mounted

internal to the blower wheel and housing.

 Electrical box mounted on the blower, houses the capacitor for internal
motor.

 Solenoid coil for the refrigerant valve is energized in the cool mode to
open the refrigerant to the coil.

 Integrated electric heat elements for the heat mode. The high
temperature protection for the heater is provided by two limit switches,
one auto-reset and one manual reset.

13
Fan Will Not Operate Properly

Check keypad to make sure it Check for proper voltage to the fan
is calling for the fan to run between L2 and fan terminal

14
Also Jump Power to the Fan
Jump L1 to fan terminal at PLHMX-HV OR Jump L1 to fan terminal in electrical box

If the fan runs with the jumper, then the problem would be in the A-288T circuit board

15
If fan still does not run
Check for voltage at the butt connectors for the
fan. If you have voltage and the fan doesn’t run, Also check the micro farads of the
then ohm out the windings of the motor. capacitor.

16
Unit Will Not Go Into Cool Mode

Run the set point

All the way down
To 55 degrees

Make sure cool

Light is lit

Make sure Cooling

indicating light is lit

17
Unit Will Not Go Into Cool Mode
Check for proper voltage, also check to see Also jump L1 to valve terminal to activate coil
if the compressor is activated and the compressor.

If you don’t have proper voltage and the coil and compressor are energized with jumper,
then the problem would be in the A-288T circuit board.
18
Check the Coil
With power on, pull coil off to If not, ohm the coil out for continuity
feel if it’s magnetized

19
Check Operation of the
Electric Heater Element
Check to make sure Aux heat has been enabled Run set point up to 99 degree’s
Press the
Off button,
then Set,
then Heat
and Set
together

AH Means
it’s Enabled
Check for

it’s Disabled

Check for
Heating
light

20
If the Aux Heat is Enabled
Also Connect a jumper between L1 and aux heat
Check for proper voltage
terminal

If you don’t have proper voltage, and the heater works with jumper, then the problem may either be
with the A-548 triac or in the A-288T.

21
Checking the Triac
Remove the small yellow and purple wire from
the circuit board

MT1 Terminal
Black wire
Gate Terminal
Yellow Wire

MT2 Terminal Connect a 100 ohm ½ watt resister between the yellow
Purple wire and purple wire. Turn power on, if heater comes on then
the triac is good. The problem would be in the A-288T.

22
Testing Triac with Ohm Meter
Connect OHM Meter
between MT1 & MT2

Good Triac can show Mega Ohms.

Meter should be reading “OL” for
Watch out for the Mega Or M sign
open line or Mega Ohms
on the meter.

23
Good Triac should read low (0 – 60 ohm)
or a closed circuit condition
While keeping ohm meter hooked up,
connect a jumper across MT2 & gate

Or use the lead from your meter

to jump across MT2 and the
Gate Terminal
24
Defective triac will have no change
with the jumper

With test leads on MT1 & MT2 Bad Triac shows the same
it is showing an ohm reading instead reading when jumped out
of an open circuit
25
Check Voltage at the Heater
Connect meter across white/red and purple Then check voltage on the other side of the limit

If you have proper voltage, turn power off and pull heat assembly out

26
Ohm Out the Automatic
Reset Limit Switch
Pull wires off of the limit Check for continuity across the terminals

27
Ohm Out the Heating Element
Disconnect wires and check for continuity

To check for the proper ohm reading

on a 2 KW heater by Ohms Law

Ohms = voltage squared divided by

watts
Or R=E2 divided by P
R = 240 X 240 divided by 2000
R = 57,600 divided by 2000
R = 28.8 ohms

A bad heater should show an open circuit
