Lesson 43 Assignment: Chi-Square GOF Period:

1. Discuss why performing a Chi-Square GOF test is appropriate to determine if students at OHS differ in the
distribution of blood types.
We have a categorical variable with more than two categories. The goal of this question is to see if
a sample yields significantly different results than a specified distribution.

2.State your null and alternative hypotheses for this test.

3. What conditions are necessary to perform this test? Are these conditions met?

6. What conclusion can you draw based on your p-value?

With a significance level of 5% we would reject the null hypothesis due to our p-value being less
than the significance level. Therefore we do have convincing evidence that the blood types at OHS
differ from the national distribution of blood types.

7. An alternative method when drawing a conclusion is to use the critical Chi-Square value. Find the critical
chi-square value and restate your conclusion using this value.

If 7 a 0.05

X'critical value 14.067

5 14 067
With a significance level of 5% we would reject the null hypothesis due to our test statistic being greater
than the critical value. Therefore we do have convincing evidence that the blood types at OHS differ from
the national distribution of blood types.

8. A local Orlando radio station to a random sample of 250 listeners and asked which type of music they
preferred and compared it to the findings of a national survey. The results are listed in the table below.

Type of Music National Survey Results (%) Orlando Survey Results (frequency)

Pop 21% 60

Hip Hop/Rap 27% 65

Rock 12% 18

Classical 3% 15

Country 19% 45

EDM 18% 47

Is there convincing evidence that the distribution for music preference in Orlando is different from the National
results? Use the 4-step plan.
