Should Cybersquatters Be Prosecuted?

Should cybersquatting be illegal? Why or why not?

- Cybersquatting should be illegal. Many countries action and have law of this like in
U.S.The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, or ACPA, makes it illegal under U.S.
federal law to engage in the practice of cybersquatting even in our country. The senate in the
Philippines approved a new law which classifies cybersquatting as act of crime. Squatters could
face six to 12 years in jail if found guilty under the new Senate Bill. Six years is the minimum
term with a maximum of twelve years.

It is ethical to profit from cybersquatting? Why or why not?

- It is not ethical to profit from cybersquatting because cybersquatting uses the domain
which is a trademark of the owner who can make a profit by selling the domain name.
For example, if the cybersquatting using the same name for selling items without
knowing the owner of the trademark, the original company will be loss because of such
cyberquatters.

How should companies protect their brands when registering for domain names?

- Companies can protect their brands when registering for domain names. First, by checking and
double checking if the website is a genuine or a fake site before registering for domain name,
Ensure communications with your domain name registrar and register the company name and
domain name as a protected mark (trademark or service mark).Lastly is Monitor expiration
dates and Beware of spammers and others with evil intentions
