GRAMMAR : MODAL VERBS


They can express: Suggestion, permission, Certainty and Possibility
There are 9 modals verbs: must, might, may, will, would, can, could, shall, should.

Rule 1: Infinitives come after modal verbs but without “to”.


Rule 2: Modal verbs take no “s” in the 3rd person singular
Rule 3. Modal verbs don’t change their form according to the sentence
Rule 4: Contractions

Rule 5: With interrogative questions modal verb are used as auxiliaries


HOW TO USE MIGHT: Can be used to show possibility (Podrian)
They might be eating Lunch
She might give us a discount

HOW TO USE MAY: Can be used to show possibility and permission (Pueden)
The teacher may be late today
May I leave now? (quiet formal)

HOW TO USE MUST: probability/logical assumption also necessity


And prohibition
She must be stuck in traffic
I must go home right now

HOW TO USE WILL: Future time, promise/Willingness and ask polite questions
I will leave at 7 o’clock
I will give money to charity this Christmas
Will you help me with this

HOW TO USE WOULD: Polite questions and Invitations/preferences/desires


Would you help me with this?
Would you prefer apples or oranges
I would like a cup of tea

HOW TO USE CAN: Ability, suggestion/option, impossibility and request


I can speak English
You can call him tomorrow

HOW TO USE COULD: Past ability, Polite question, possibility/impossibility and suggestion
