ANALYSIS OF FINANCIAL STATEMENT
INTRODUCTION: -
Financial analysis is the process of evaluating businesses, projects, budgets, and other
finance related transactions to determine their performance and suitability. It is typically used to
analyze whether an entity is stable, solvent, liquid, or profitable enough to warrant a monetary
investment. Financial analysis can be conducted in both corporate finance and investment finance
settings.
There are two main types of financial analysis: fundamental analysis and technical analysis.
Fundamental analysis uses ratios and financial statement data to determine the intrinsic value of a
security. Technical analysis assumes a security’s value is already determined by its price, and it
focuses instead on trends in value over time. Financial analysis can help fund managers make
future business decisions or review historical trends for past successes. If conducted externally,
financial analysis can help investors choose the best possible investment opportunities.
For the hospitality industry, there are specific financial ratios that can be used to
analyze the industry and the performance of individual companies. These ratios can be
broadly grouped into the following six silos based on the sets of data they provide:
1) Liquidity Ratios: Liquidity ratios measure a company’s ability to pay off its short-term
debts as they become due, using the company’s current or quick assets. Liquidity ratios
include the current ratio, quick ratio, and working capital ratio.
3) Solvency Ratios: Solvency ratios measure a company’s ability to meet its long-term debts
and obligations. Solvency ratios include the debt-to-equity ratio, debt-to-asset ratio, and
interest coverage ratio.
4) Activity ratios: It used to measure how efficiently a company is using its assets to generate
revenue. For the hotel industry, the paid occupancy ratio is a key activity ratio that
measures how full the hotel is at a given time. It is calculated by dividing the number of
paid rooms occupied by the total number of available rooms. Most hotels aim for an
occupancy rate of at least 80%.
Operating ratios:
are used to measure the efficiency of a company’s operations by comparing its operating expenses
to its net sales. They are a useful tool for evaluating the performance of companies in the service
industry
