Hemingway’s life.”

(The PPT will be presented)

(Slide 1 Discussion)
 Ernest Hemingway (Ernest Miller Hemingway) was born in
Oak Park, Illinois, in 1899, the son of a doctor and a music
teacher. He began his writing career as a reporter for the
Kansas City Star. At age eighteen, he volunteered to serve
as a Red Cross ambulance driver in World War I and was
sent to Italy, where he was badly injured by shrapnel.
 After recuperating at home, Hemingway renewed his
efforts at writing, for a while worked at odd jobs in
Chicago, and sailed for France as a foreign correspondent
for the Toronto Star
 In 1926 he published The Sun Also Rises, his first novel.
“My students, do you think that Hemingway’s journey in “Sir, it’s complicated because he
writing is simple? or complicated? experienced various things along the
way.”

“Right, he experienced many things, and he almost died

due to a bullet shrapnel or fragment”
(Slide 2)
 He had 4 wives throughout his life (Hadley Richardson in
1921, to Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gellhorn and Mary Welsh)
 The writing of books occupied Hemingway for most of the
postwar years. He remained based in Paris, but he
traveled widely for the skiing, bullfighting, fishing, and
hunting that by then had become part of his life and
formed the background for much of his writing.
“For sure everyone here knows or have heard about skiing,
bullfighting, fishing, and hunting right? Can anyone share “Yes Ma’am”
their ideas about these activities?” (Students will share their ideas)
 Reaching back to his experience as a young soldier in Italy,
Hemingway developed a grim but lyrical novel of great
power, fusing love story with war story.
“So, everyone, can you imagine the combination of war “Yes Ma’am”
and love story?”

Though, compared to others, he uses shorter and more

straight forward words in writing.
(Slide 3)
 He published many novels such as The Sun Also Rises, For
Whom the Bell Tolls, The Old Man and the Sea, and A
Farewell to Arms.
 Among these, The Old Man and the Sea, his last novel was
considered a great masterpiece.
 When Hemingway lived in Key West, Florida, and later in
Cuba, his years of experience fishing the Gulf Stream and
the Caribbean provided an essential background for the
vivid descriptions of the fisherman’s craft in The Old Man
and the Sea.
 In 1936, he wrote a piece for Esquire about a Cuban
fisherman who was dragged out to sea by a great marlin, a
game fish that typically weighs hundreds of pounds.
Sharks had destroyed the fisherman’s catch by the time he
was found half-delirious by other fishermen.
“Does anyone here know what Esquire means?” (The students are unfamiliar with the
“Oh, it seems like you’re unfamiliar with it since it’s word)
uncommon. It’s a title of respect for a man or it’s also
added on a man’s name. So, Hemingway wrote a piece
about the story for the man because he’s respected after
he survived such an experience.”
 This story became the inspiration for the tale of Santiago
in The Old Man and the Sea.
(Slide 4)
 Shortly after the publication of The Old Man and the Sea
which is his last novel, he went on safari to Africa, where
he was almost killed in two successive plane crashes that
left him in ill health for much of the rest of his life. In
1959 he moved from Cuba to Ketchum, Idaho, where he
put an end to his life in the summer of 1961 due to anxiety
and depression.
 He shot himself with a shotgun
“Such a tragic fate, isn’t it class?”
“Yes Ma’am”

“Well, that ends our short discussion about Ernest Hemingway and
a short background of The Old Man and the Sea.”

“Well done class! Do you have any questions or clarifications? (Students say no/yes and ask questions)
(Answer student’s questions)

GENERALIZATION (Gracelyn)

“Now class, let us recall the various events that happened in the (Students answer)
life of Ernest Hemingway. My students, can you give me some of
the events which happened on his life?”
“Very Good!”

“Also, class, let us take note about his last novel which is The Old
Man and the Sea which was inspired by his experiences in fishing in
the Gulf Stream and also an Esquire about a Cuban fisherman.”
