1 INTRODUCTION: EMISSION
1. Introduction: Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Emission Limits:
Modern engine development is driven by Emission g/kwh NOx CO HC PM
legislative emission requirements and growing
vehicle electronic architecture in the market. EDC Bharat Stage I 8.0 4.5 1.1 0.36
or the Electronic Diesel Control system is capable Bharat Stage II 7.0 4.0 1.1 0.15
of meeting the legislative emission requirements
and the market driven demands. Bharat Stage III 5.0 2.1 0.66 0.10
The EDC system consists of Sensors, Electronic Bharat Stage IV 3.5 1.5 0.46 0.02
Control Unit (ECU) and Actuators. The Sensors
detect engine operating conditions and driver’s
demand. They convert physical variables into
electrical signals.
The ECU processes information received from
the sensors. It controls the actuators through
electrical output signals. It also provides interfaces
with other systems like diagnostic tool, ABS and
others
INTRODUCTION: EMISSION 2
On Board Diagnostics 2 (OBD2) Limits: OBD2 Requirements
¾¾ To achieve this goal, the ECU must do the
following:
99 Test all exhaust emission system components
for correct operation.
99 Actively operate the system and measure
the results.
99 Continuously monitor all aspects of the
engine operation to be certain that the
exhaust emissions do not exceed 1.5 times.
99 Turn on the MIL (Malfunction Indicator
Lamp) if NOx level > 3.5 g/kWh or specified
limits.
99 Record a freeze-frame, which is a snapshot
of the engine data at the time the DTC was
set.
99 Activate torque limiter immediately for
error codes which are causing NOx emission
above 3.5 g/kwh.

27 IMPORTANT GUIDELINES
9. IMPORTANT GUIDELINES
9.1 During Body Building Ensure presence of cap for the diagnostic
connector
Disconnect battery terminals & two connectors
in ECU during body building/before any welding ECU must be connect or diconnected only when
job. the power is switched off/ignition switch is in
off position.
Avoid falling of weld spatters on wiring harness Keep the batteries in healthy condition
& sensors.
Ensure polarity of Battery connection Keep the ignition switch off while removing the
battery connection in the vehicle.
9.2 DO's & Dont's Do not jump start engine
Electrical tapping not allowed Do not change the position of ECU
Do not touch ECU pins directly with hand.
Do not remove/cut wires of the EDC system
wiring hareness. No extension or intermediate Switch off isolator switch only after 30secs of
joints are permitted. ignition switch off.
Avoid removing/assembling Sensors, actuators
Do not splash water directly on ECU, sensors & and ECU connectors, while ignition switch is on.
other electrical components
Ensure proper earthing/grounding of ECU/EDC
wiringharness-earthing points to be free from
paint.
IMPORTANT GUIDELINES 28
Avoid Checking at ECU. In case of utmost requirement ensure ECU body is always
connected to starter Negative
Care to be taken not to short the supply voltage / Sensor Output with earth / Negative
NOTE
1. Don’t interchange BSIII and BSIV ECU and also don’t interchange the CB18/CB28
injectors which adversely affects engine performance
2. BS IV with Electric EGR drive is ‘H’ Bridge ECU.
