These radiotracers target tumor tissue in the brain and contribute to the grading of tumor
aggressiveness and, more importantly, to distinguishing tumor recurrence from post-surgical tissue
reactions and scar tissue formation (Chen et al. 2005, P. Chen et al. 2006) ( Figure 3.3 ). NOTE: We

reimbursement, increased competition between imaging centers for patients, and increasing
administrative and personnel costs, clinical practice resources have declined and are no longer
sufficient to support initial clinical evaluation studies of new molecular probes. The first page of the

medical technology are projected to increase by 16% from 2008 to 2018. Changes in glucose
consumption can be detected using FDG-PET, where a reduction in tumor uptake of FDG predicts
the likely effectiveness of chemotherapy. Stringent confidentiality requirements, such as those
mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, 7 pose additional difficulties

available on the JRCNMT website. Existing imaging techniques also offer a means for assessing the
effectiveness of gene- and cell-based approaches for repairing the injured heart muscle tissue or for
improving cardiac function. Associated administrative burdens, together with excessive delays for
institutional review and approval of study protocols have impeded clinical research. Program
graduates will be eligible to apply for an examination administered either by the Nuclear Medicine
Technology Certification Board or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology. Based on

clinical trials for diagnostic imaging agents pose considerable financial burdens that are frequently
beyond the means of investigators in academia. Imaging was performed before the start of treatment

patient with Alzheimer’s disease, the arrows indicate areas of diminished metabolic activity in the

memories. Their use is therefore confined to institutions capable of onsite radionuclide production
and radiotracer chemistry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the current average salary for.

enhanced the accuracy with which disease can be detected, aided in the determination of the extent
and severity of disease, enhanced the accuracy for identifying disease-related risk, and improved the
ability to monitor patient response to therapy. It is a syndrome associated with shrinking of the
frontal and temporal anterior lobes of the brain (see diagram) that disrupts either an individual’s
ability to understand language (difficulty speaking or understanding speech) or causes changes in the
person’s behavior (e.g., loss of impulse control resulting in inappropriate social behavior, lack of
empathy, apathy) (NINDS 2006b). Note the intense radiotracer uptake in the AD patient (yellow and
red colors) as compared to very little tracer uptake in the normal control (blue and purple). These
professionals are tasked with using advanced medical equipment to aid in the diagnosis of injuries
and illnesses. However, nuclear medicine technicians specializing in various diagnostic technologies
such as nuclear cardiology or diagnostic medical sonography may have better employment prospects.

due to organ-specific utilization of glucose. A time table was proposed in the act, according to which

high non-response rates. The text discusses the purpose of a thallium study, emphasizing the skills

For example, the 1997 FDA Modernization Act, and the congressional and regulatory action that
accompanied the enacting of this legislation, made possible the implementation of FDG-PET
imaging as a clinical reality. Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s ( Figure 3.4 ), Pick’s,
and Huntington’s diseases ( Sidebar 3.3 ), are typically associated with decreased glucose
metabolism in certain parts of the brain. In addition, other neurotransmitter systems (e.g., cholinergic,
noradrenergic, serotonergic) also degenerate in Parkinson’s disease, and the use of imaging to
monitor changes in these systems, particularly in relation to disease progression, could represent
another important future research direction (Brooks 2007). Radiolabeled peptides, antibody
fragments, and, more recently, nanoparticles targeting different cell surface molecules also hold
promise for tumor imaging and for targeted radionuclide therapy. NMTs utilize their expertise in
diagnostic imaging and therapeutics to safely and effectively use radionuclides. Additional benefits
would come from targeted support for phase 0 and phase I clinical trials of new agents within
academic centers, which are still the most likely sites for development of new agents. One hallmark
of cancer cells is that they consume larger amounts of glucose than normal cells, because of a shift in
energy production.
Although a SPECT camera is more commonly used to take pictures of the heart, PET can also be
used ( Figure 1 ). For example, the effects of novel compounds on cell proliferation or cell
metabolism can be determined in small-animal tumor models with fluorine-18-FLT and fluorine-18-
FDG and thus serve as a “generic pharmacodynamic readout” (Leyton et al. 2005). NOTE: We only

aberrant brain tissue is critical for determining eligibility of patients for surgical treatment approaches
designed to abolish seizure disorders that are inadequately controlled by medications. Radiotracers
for nuclear medicine imaging are supplied on a dose basis through networks of radiopharmacies and
radiopharmaceutical distribution centers. A three-dimensional fusion image of CT angiography and
PET myocardial perfusion imaging is shown. In the future, the widespread availability of highly
specific radiotracers that can be used in basic neuroscience research in humans can be expected to aid
in understanding the biological processes of these diseases and, ultimately, the development of better
treatments (Koob 2006, Zipursky et al. 2007). NOTE: We only request your email address so that the

of thymidine, and thereby provide a measurement of DNA synthesis and cell proliferation in vivo.
They employ radiopharmaceuticals, which are radioactive materials, to generate organ images,
investigate bodily functions, inspect biological samples, and treat diseases. Working in nuclear

to develop new agents and discourages commercial investment. For example, a variety of new anti-
cancer drugs such as inhibitors of epithelial growth factor receptors have been found highly effective
for killing cancer cells (Sequist et al. 2007). If additional tumor characteristics can be identified with
target-specific molecular probes, it will become possible to select specific treatment strategies for
individual patients and improve the probability of treatment success.
