Exercise 1

- Good afternoon, Captain. I don´t think <we have met before>. I´m Alejandro Rodriguez.
- <How do you do>? Pleased to meet you. I am Andrew James. <Welcome on board>, Mr
Rodriguez.
- <Thank you>. I understand you are ready <to leave port>.
- Yes, we´ve just about finished with <the paper work> and <Port State Control>.
The cargo loading operations are completed. I think we are actually all set <to start
singling up>.

Exercise 2

- Is there any <particular information> you would like to give me, Captain? Any recent changes
on board?
- No, not really - I have the <pilot card> for you. Here you are. I´ll be happy to fill you in with
any <manoeuvring> data you need.
- Thanks, there are a few questions I´d like to ask. Is the engine room <manned>?
- The engine room will be <manned> while leaving port, but is on bridge <control>, answers
Captain James.
- How long does it take to change engines from ahead to <astern>?

Exercise 3

- And you have a bow thruster?


- Yes, a bow thruster of 900 kw.
- And what is your maximum present draught?
- It is 8 meters.
- Ok, fine. One or two more things, says Rodriguez. Do you have a controllable or a fixed-pitch
propeller?
- We have a fixed-pitch propeller, answers the Captain.
- Is the turning effect of the propeller very strong?

- Yes, it is very strong.


- So how long does it take from hard-a-port to hard-a-starboard? asks the pilot.
- It takes 20 seconds.
- And what is the speed at full ahead and dead slow ahead?
- Let me see, at full ahead it is 17 knots and at dead slow ahead 4 knots, answers Captain James.
- I think that about covers it. You are getting tug assistance? asks Rodriguez.
- Yes, we will have one tug assisting us while casting off.
- Are you ready to get underway?
- Yes, indeed we are.
- All right then. Stand by engines, says Rodriguez.

Exercise 6

1. Antwerp, Gdynia and Riga are <ports of call> on the Marina´s route.

Exercise 7

Midships! Rudder to be held in the fore and aft position


Port twenty-five 25º of port rudder to be held

Meet her Check the swing of the vessel´s head in a turn


Steady on... When the vessel is steady on the heading the
helmsman calls out.
Steady Reduce swing as rapidly as possible
Ease to five Reduce amount of rudder to five and hold
Nothing to port Avoid letting the vessel´s head go to port
Steady as she goes Steer a steady course on the compass heading
indicated at the time of the order.

Exercise 1

You wish the deckhands to:


reduce the number of stern lines Single up aft!
loosen the line at the bow Slack away head line!
cast off the all lines at the bow Let go all forward!
pull tight on the bow spring Heave on the forward spring!
keep breast line steady Hold on breast line!
be prepared to cast off Stand by for letting go!
cast off all lines Let go all ropes!
