    Passwords in Windows are stored using a hashing methodology. When a password is set or changed, Windows generates a LM hash and NT hash to store in the Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database instead of the actual password. During login, Windows computes the hash of the entered password and compares it to the stored hashes to authenticate the user. Hashes are irreversible so the actual password is not stored.
