WORK IMMERSION: REAL WORLD

EXPERIENCE OF SENIOR HIGH

SCHOOL STUDENTS
Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the study
Immersion is the act of fully submerging something within another. This can be
done through books, movies, or video games; however the term is most frequently used
in this context when referring to video games. Virtual reality immersion is the concept of
the user’s emotional reaction to the virtual world, in terms of feeling as if they are
literally part of the virtual world. It is the perception of being physically present in a non-
physical world. In the same vein, an immersive digital environment is a scene or “world”
that a player can immerse themselves within. It is artificial, interactive, and computer-
created and mostly thought to be synonymous with virtual reality.
According to Valdez (2010), the curriculum may continue to revisit periodically to
align the skills needed by the industry. The curriculum should be designed to prepare
the graduates and demonstrate the core competencies expected of them in the
workplace. On-the-job training is the best method as it is economical, simple, and
effective and everybody can do it doesn't need wide-ranging budget ,complex training
courses, devoted training staffs or absence from the workplace. Its effectiveness can be
significantly enhanced by applying a methodical approach based on the UKEssay.
Rendering to this, “Importantly, each on-the-job model has its own merits and
weaknesses but they all serve the same purpose of providing the trainees with the
opportunity to “practice and learn by doing”, they added. UkEssays’ researchers relate
this to Confucius’ perception; “if all I do is hear, I will forget. If I hear and see, I will
remember. If I hear, see and do, I will understand
Work immersion provides Senior High School learners with opportunities to
become familiar with the workplace, simulate employment, and to apply their
competencies in areas of specialization or applied subjects in actual work environment
to prepare learners for all curriculum exits.
Work immersion will assist in the learners' development of life and career skills
and will position them to choose between post-secondary education and employment.
Through establishing partnerships, DepEd expects that the Partner Institutions would
give students opportunities for job immersion, real-world experience, and access to
more resources for learning. It seeks to help students understand the significance and
practical application of the theories and principles they have acquired in school, improve
their technical knowledge and skills, hone their interpersonal and communication skills,
and cultivate positive work habits and attitudes.
Theoretical Framework of the study
This work immersion experienced is anchored of DepEd The Department of
Education (DepEd) issues the enclosed Guidelines for Work Immersion as basis for the
implementation of work immersion in all Senior High Schools (SHSs). Work Immersion
is a key feature of your SHS Curriculum. It can be conducted in different ways
depending on the purposes and needs of learners. Enclosed are the documents
pertinent to its implementation. These guidelines will take effect starting School Year
2017-2018 for all SHSs. These guidelines will remain in force and in effect for the
duration of the program, unless sooner repealed, amended, or rescinded. All existing
Orders and memoranda that are inconsistent with this Order are hereby rescinded.
Immediate dissemination of and strict compliance with this Order is directed.

According to YKS (2018) they will know about the work ethics, will gain
knowledge about the safety in the workplace, the rights, responsibilities, learning the
effective way to resolve conflicts among coworkers and the work will not be that hard for
them if they apply at the same or related company. Rarely are OJT students expected to
produce the same products that regular employees produce. If that’s the case, how are
these students going to learn prior to their expectation with these experts that are going
to teach them to be future professionals.
According to Trade Congress of the Philippines (2015) the word “immersion” as it
applies to the K to 12 curriculum is defined in the Department of Education (DepEd)
Order No. 40, series of 2015: “Work Immersion refers to the part of the Senior High
School (SHS) Curriculum consisting of 80 hours of hands-on experience or work
simulation which the Grades 11 and 12 students will undergo to expose them to the
actual workplace setting and to enrich the competencies provided by the school under
the supervision of the School Head and the designated personnel of the Partner.”
Immersion is done outside the school campus in a “Workplace Immersion Venue,”
defined as “the place where work immersion of students is done. Examples of work
immersion venues include offices, factories, shops and project site.
According to Henry (2011) having the immersion was really a good start to
experience how does it feel to be in a workplace. These students provide unique
insights into what it’s like to get hands on experience through full time employment in a
technology-driven global work environment. One reason many of us go to college is to
learn the knowledge necessary to acquire a job and pursue a career after we graduate.
We aim to gain the skills that we will need to work in an industry. This is what really sold
me on the GET experience. I was able to go to work for 40 hours a week, get real,
hands on knowledge of applications, development, and corporate culture, as well as
earn credit towards my major. The best part was that they treated me like a full time
employee, not an intern. This is what really sold me on the GET experience. I was able

According to Ronda (2018) The Department of Education (DepEd) is banking on
the “strong partnerships” it has forged with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (PCCI) and other industry groups as the Grade 12 students under the K-12
basic education curriculum take their work immersion course requirement. Work
immersion, according to the DepEd, is a key subject under the Senior High School
curriculum that may be conducted in different ways and time frame as needed by SHS
learners. The subject provides learners opportunities to familiarize themselves with the
workplace; to simulate employment, and to apply their competencies in areas of
specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environment.
According to the study of Fortune (2015) over nearly half a century, research on
language immersion education has heralded benefits such as academic achievement,
language and literacy development in two or more languages, and cognitive skills. This
research also exposes some of the challenges that accompany the immersion model,
with its multilayered agenda of language, literacy and intercultural skills development
during subject matter learning. This chapter outlines key findings for both advantages
and challenges.
According to Carlos (2018) the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 stipulates
that two (2) more years in high school shall be added, hence the creation of senior high
school. The Act is geared towards enhancing further the skills and knowledge of
students for them to be well equipped in facing the challenges that lay ahead, whether
in pursuing higher studies in college or in entering the very competitive employment
field.
THE PROBLEM
Statement of the problem
1. What is the profile of the immersionist and the establishments terms of:

would benefit the future researchers by using it as a reference for their study of related
field.

Methodology

Design
This research study used the Direct observation method design. The observation
method is the most commonly used technique especially in research studies connecting
to behavioral sciences. In such a way all of us observe things around us, but this sort of
observation is not clinical observation. Observation becomes a scientific tool and the
approach of data collection for the researcher, when it serves a formulated research
function, is methodically prepared and taped and goes through checks and controls on
validity and reliability. Under the observation approach, the information is looked for by
method of investigator's own direct observation without asking from the respondent.

Environment
This study will be conducted at the San Fernando Municipal Fire Station from the
category fire Brigade in San Fernando ,Cebu. The only fire station of San Fernando
which is near at the supermarket. The Work Immersion started on February 13,2023
and ended on February 24,2023

Instruments
In this study the researchers use the observation, review and document
analysis.
Through observation, the researcher can gain a first-hand experience of how
operates. They can observe how personnel respond to emergencies, how they use
equipment and tools, and how they interact with the public. This can provide valuable
insights into the day-to-day operations and help the researcher understand the
organization's strengths and weaknesses.
Interviews with personnel can provide valuable insights into their experiences
and perspectives. Through interviews, the researcher can gain a deeper understanding
of the challenges that personnel encounter in their work, as well as the skills and
knowledge required to do their job effectively. Additionally, interviews with leadership
can provide insights into the organization's goals, strategies, and priorities.
Document analysis involves reviewing and analyzing documents related to
BFP, such as incident reports, training manuals, and policy documents. This can provide
valuable insights into the organization's history, operations, and decision-making
processes. Additionally, document analysis can help the researcher identify areas where
improvements can be made, such as training programs or communication strategies.
Overall, by using observation, interview, and document analysis, the researcher can
gain a comprehensive understanding of BFP and its operations. This can help identify
areas where improvements can be made, as well as inform future policy and decision-
making processes.

PRESENTATION, DATA, AND INTERPRETATION

This chapter discussed the presentation, and interpretation of data.It provided the
gathered data, researchers analysis and interpretation of the result of the direct
observation method in relation to the problem and sub-problems of the study.

PROFILE OF THE IMMERSIONIST AND THE ESTABLISHMENT

This data is composed of the work immersion logbook, establishment chart,

number of department emloyees, vision and mission, which are the important
component of the profile of the immersionist and the establishment in conducting this
study.

Work Immersion Logbook

The Student Immersion Logbook is divided into three (3) parts. Part 1 includes
information on your profile, your host employer and your school. It also contains
learning agreement and indemnity form that you will sign to be part of this immersion
program. Part 2 Includes information on the roles of your school, your employer and
yourself during immersion placement. It also contains your preparation checklist for
work immersion placement, daily journal and evaluate your work immersion. Lastly, Part
3 includes two sections which need to be completed by your host employer at the end of
your work immersion placement. You need to make sure that both sections in this part
are completed before you leave the workplace.
Establishment Chart and Number of Employees

This organization's structure is shown in this figure, along with the relationships
and relative ranks of its many parts and positions. The department, which consists of 12
Fire officers, is divided into two shifts, A and B, which alternate duty every two weeks.
The shift B is granted time to take a rest for two weeks while shift A is working,
especially those who live far from the workplace.

Vision and Mission

The BFP’s philosophy is “We serve, so that others may live”. As a public safety
agency, their organization adheres to the doctrine of life preservation in the event of
emergency, disaster, and calamity. The vision statement aspires and expresses their
plan or “Vision” for the future and potential impact on the world. While their mission
statement declares the purpose of their organization that serves to it’s people.

Day1,I started my work immersion we had an orientation and rules and regulation and
after they discussed about method of extinguish and chain reaction and inhibition. Day
2, they discussed about the 3 types of fire truck and taught how to use the different tools
after we were given a short test. Day 3, They discussed about fire extinguisher and how
to use it correctly and after we had a short test. Day 4, they discussed about important
of the fire exit drills and also what we are doing to do in that situation. Day5,I was
instructed to encode the different department stores and the information. Day 6,our
mentor instruct us how to wear PPE properly and they given the activity to speed up
wearing PPE(Personal Protective Equipment). Day7, they discussed about different
kind of hose and we given a activity of doing throwing hose in various way and how to
handle it correctly and after we were instructed to encode. Day8,they discussed about
types of rope rescue and taught us what are the proper rescue of people when they are
in tragedy. Day9,I observed that they are very busy doing their jobs. Lastly, on day 10,I
observed that every Friday was there cleaning operation and we arranged the things
and we helping each other to finish quickly.I have learned from day 1 to 10, during my
work experience at the Bureau of Fire Protection,I was fortunate enough to experience
and learn new things and I learn about safety protocols that must be followed in different
types of emergencies, such as hazardous material spills and natural
disaster.Additionaly, I learned that safety protocols must put in place to ensure that fire
fighter and properly trained and prepared for any situation.
