CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter includes the background and rationale of the Work Immersion
Program, the significance of the program and report, and the operational definition of
terms involved in the duration of the program.

Background and Rationale

Our country has been experiencing big changes lately. For they say that change
is only the constant thing in the world. In terms of education, the Philippine Educational
System has been developed to provide the learner’s the best. It happened the moment
we changed our own curriculum system to a widely use one, the K-12 curriculum.

With the passage of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or Republic Act
10533, DepEd was tasked to implement the K to 12 Program, essentially adding two
years of specialization within the Basic Educational System; DepEd designed the
implementation of RA 10533 within the framework of increased community involvement
in the learner’s experience. With this premise, DepEd offers venues for various
stakeholders to participate in the implementation of RA 10533 and, the same offer,
accepted by the PARTIES herein. And just recently, the Department of Education has
released the guidelines for the conduct of work immersion activities for senior high
school students in the country.

The Senior High School Work Immersion Program pursuant to DepEd Order No.
30, s. 2017 is one of the course requirements for graduation. A Senior High School
student has to undergo Work Immersion in an industry that directly relates to the
student’s post-secondary goal. Through Work Immersion, the students are exposed to
and become familiar with work-related environment related to their field of specialization
to enhance their competence, work ethics, and values relevant to pursuing further
education and/or joining the world of work. Specifically, the students are able to: gain
relevant and practical industrial skills under the guidance of industry experts and
workers; appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories taught
in school; enhance their technical knowledge and skills; enrich their skills in
communications and human relations; and develop good work habits, attitudes,
appreciation, and respect for work. These prepare them to meet the needs and
challenges of employment or higher education after graduation.

To achieve the goals of the K to 12 Program, the Department of Education

(DepEd) needs to enter into partnerships with different groups in the fields of work
immersion opportunities for public Senior High School (SHS) learners, use of facilities
and equipment, additional teacher training opportunities, and additional resources in the
form of donations.

According to DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, the work immersion is a key

feature in the senior high school curriculum. It can be conducted in different ways
depending on the purposes and needs of the learners. It was stated in the guidelines
that work immersion will help develop among learners life and career skills, and will
prepare them to make decisions on postsecondary education or employment gearing
towards the four exits envisioned for SHS graduates to choose from employment,
entrepreneurship, further skills training through TESDA and college education. The said
work immersion activity can range from 80 to 320 hours. DepEd hopes that partner
institutions will provide learners with work immersion opportunities, workplace or hands-
on experience, and additional learning resources through partnership building. The
schools may partner with recognized institutions or organizations to come up with
agreements on work immersion for students and because the students are still minors,
work immersion requires parental consent. Because the safety of learners is primary to
Deped, the department shall ensure that all schools and venues for learning are
conducive to the education and safety of the learners. This endeavor is in collaboration
with its partners and stakeholders found near where the schools are located. The
guidelines further provide that the maximum number of hours spent in the work
immersion venue is 40 hours per week and no more than eight hours per day as
provided by law. So as not to exploit the students who are still minors, DepEd stressed
that work immersion should not be reduced as a mere recruitment tool for a partner
institution, saying that the students should also gain skills that will enable them to qualify
for other job options. Consequently, the schools and students should not be asked to
pay the senior high school partner institution for any work immersion activity conducted.
The guidelines added that fees for work immersion must only be set after consultation
with parents.

By the time learners reach Senior High School, they would have already acquired
almost all the competencies and skills that would prepare them for the curriculum exits
(higher education, employment, middle-skills development, and entrepreneurship).
Work immersion provides them with an avenue to test themselves and apply what they
have learned in a non-school scenario. In work immersion, learners are not only able to
apply their previous training but are also able to experience the social interaction in a
work environment. Their experiences during work immersion will develop many skills
and values that would help them as they transition from high school to real life.

To assure the achievement of the work immersion objectives, this policy serves
to guide schools in: creating flexible work immersion arrangements for their learners;
providing options for work immersion that are relevant to learner’s purpose and needs;
organizing work immersion opportunities for learners that are consistent with the diverse
human resource requirements of partner institutions for work immersion; and articulating
the scope and limits of work immersion in the context of basic education when building
relationships with work immersion partners.

The Immersion student was exposed in an actual work environment, in the

Bethel Guest House/Lord Byrons/360 Travel and Tours. HE/SHE chose because she
believes that large hospital environments can provide opportunities for her to gain
valuable experience, expand her knowledge with training and by working alongside
experts. She chooses Medical Field for she wanted to do something in her career that is
challenging, interesting, and makes a difference in people's lives on a daily basis and
she enjoys the variety in the routine. Dealing with patients and their families, and
helping them through what is often a difficult time for them is extremely satisfying for
her. Having had the experience of work immersion had made her realized the
commitment and responsibility needed when engaging in the multi-disciplinary practice

Significance of the Study

This report is deemed beneficial to:
The Future Immersion Students, for they will be guided during their immersion; they will
have an insight of what they they should do on their chosen field and they can avoid the
same problems the Immersee had encountered;
Partner Institutions, so they can provide the appropriate needs of the Immersion
Students and they will know what are the samples or requirements that they needed;
Institution, so they will know what are they going to improve on guiding the Immersion
students and what are the problems in the program that needs to be address;
Immersion Teacher, so they will have knowledge on how to help and supervise the
Immersion students because through this they will know what are the problems that
they've encountered.

The Training Locale

The Local Learning During my work experience at Bethel Guest House, I was lucky

enough to have first-hand insight and learned from it. When we proceed to our

respective area where we are named and greeted with a gratifying smile by the people

in our Department who assure us that they are happy to help. They taught us a lot of things

and one of those things are some tips on working in the kitchen and restaurant. As I was in the

restaurant, I learned how to value the word "patience" to the costumers. Whenever a guest

enter the cafe we must give them our best shot, be polite to them, let them feel that they are

very welcome to the place, They taught us a lot of things and one of those things are some tips

word "patience" to the costumers. Whenever a guest enter the cafe we must give them our best

shot, be polite to them, let them feel that they are very welcome to the place, Speak to them

with a sense of respect, and I have learned that even if you make a mistake, we shouldn't be

scared of it, but instead make it an inspiration to work hard and never let it happen again. Faults

means you benefit from it.

DISCUSSION

This chapter includes the specific assignment, significant experiences,

learning’s, and reflections of the immersee all throughout the period of the

immersion.

Pre-immersion experience

The immersee was very anxious before the scheduled days of immersion at work,

because it would be his first experience in the food and beverage industry.

Immersion Proper

Department Assigned/Position

The immersion started at Bethel Guesthouse Dumaguete City on February 10,

2020, and was assigned on the first and second day to work in the main kitchen. He

was anxious on the first and second, because it was his first encounter and he was

worried about what could lead to good or bad stuff when working, But the employees

made him feel relaxed, because they were people who go with the flow at all. He was

assigned to work in the café filomena on the third and fourth day because he felt he

might do something bad and it would give him a poor feedback, on his fifth and sixth
day he was assigned to make the desserts and he was good at making in the ice field.

on the last day he was assigned to work in baking.

Job Description/Duties and Responsibilities

On the first day and second day, the immersee was assigned to the

main kitchen. He was instructed how to slice pork, chicken and fish for the preparation

of the food that will be cooked and serve in the cafe filomena. As an attendant in the

Café Filomena on the third and fourth day, one of the employees instructed him how to

use the coffee makers to learn about the different types of siopao, the dishes and their

cost. His task was to serve the customers with their purchased dishes and bus the rest

of the plates out and the rest on the table. On his fifth and sixth day he was assigned to

the ice land and he was instructed to make a halo halo and how to serve it to the

customers, and lastly on the seventh day he was assigned on the baking department.

He was instructed how to make siopao and how to wrap it up.

Post-immersion experience

I would tell that nothing beats the experience and the experience of

immersion gives me a taste of the real world-a glimpse of what lies ahead of me. As an

immersee, I have established to strictly follow instructions to ensure that the method is

sequencing properly. Ask query to explain your interpretation of issues and this stops you

from making mistakes. I can tell I developed the opportunity to function efficiently and

competently in the hotel. I boost my self-confidence in socializing with men. I've got the

drive to do it and have learned to be versatile. I can tell in my 84 hours of immersion that

the strand I've studied is just where I like and I'll probably stay in this career for as long as

there are work opportunities.

Once I started college I'm prepared to work in the business world one day. And I am

assuring myself after taking this immersion that this will support me in my future jobs. I

know that 84 hours is not enough to completely grasp the actual situation of working in

the real world, but I'm confident I can manage my potential job comfortably and flexibly.

I am thankful that after immersion and graduation I'll be starting a new chapter in my life.

I am curious about what's going to happen next.

Shortcomings:
Day 1
 Information overload
 Left my Apron and
It was my first day in Bethel, I was so scared because Hairnet
it was my first time, I was just observing their
movements and how they work inside the kitchen and
they introduced their selves to me so that I can call
them through their names.

Reflections:
Keep your feet on your ground and stand firm. Use your common sense and always
think positive.
Day 2 Shortcomings:

It was my 2nd day and I was still in the same place that  I had to adjust to my
I was assigned yesterday. I was taught how to cut the shyness
meat, vegetables and fruits, they also let me measure  \I will practice how to

Reflections:

We should always follow their instructions, to avoid trouble

Day 3 Shortcomings:

It is my 3rd day in bethel and I was already assigned to  I was being shy at first
another department and that department is called the because I didn’t know to
café filomena. In there I was taught how to handle how handle a customer
customers and their attitudes, so that I will be prepared at first
when a customer complains about their food and I can
talk to them about it and explain it to them. I was
taught how to serve the customer and their food in a
plate and how to operate the coffee machine.

Reflections:

In serving customer we should not be afraid or scared of them if they complain because
their complains are the ones who help the company make a better company but telling
them their mistakes.
Day 4 Shortcomings:

It’ my 4th day and I already know how to handle the  I was scolded by a

customers and I didn’t know what to do at first because
but at the end of the day I learned something. I was
even scolded by a customer because I hold the bowl in
a wrong way.

Reflections:
You must be careful with your actions in serving and hold the plates, bowls, and
utensils.

in using on how to make a dessert. complicated to use.

Reflections:

In making desserts you must have the passion in making it, you must know what are the
steps in making the desserts.
Day 6 Shortcomings:

It is my 6th day and It’s my last day in Iceland. I was  I always cut myself

It is my last day and I am now assigned in my last  My hands are always

station and that’s the baking, At first it was a bit boring shaking.
because you are just going to wait when they tell you
what to do not like the other station you will do some
hands on but in baking not always you can do hands
on and after we were taught how to make siopao, It
was so very hard to make, the dough is very soft and it
can easily break the dough. I was a bit emotional
because its already out last day and we want to thank
them for making us a better person during our work
immersion in bethel, we encountered so many
challenges and we overcome it.
Reflections:
You must put effort in making things so that the process is succesful

CHAPTER IV

Conclusion and Recommendation

The said drenching program is one approach with its picked track and strand to
build understudies of their skill and aptitudes. This also offers them a quick glimpse at
an amazing case of a potential working world depending on the direction they are going
to be taking. This will also reinforce the establishment of their hard-working attitudes in
addition to everything mentioned above, as this will set them up for what is to come.
Additionally, drenching understudies system is a thing to help them test themselves on
the off chance they are prepared to be this way or not. It comes in as the last advance
for school choices and last groundwork. The immersee believed that getting on the path
you've been endlessly looking for isn't what's really for you. You need to re-evaluate
yourself into something that will help you feel all the possible effects encountered by
these staff. The drilling system is therefore usually an outstanding advance from the
training division for people in the future.
Given the immersee's experience, he may want to recommend to the perusers
and turn out to be increasingly sincerely and scientifically structured for the system for
all the up and coming clump of immersee. It could also benefit if immersee carries out
more historical verifications of the operation they are going to do in order to organise
themselves. They should be prepared for extensive work movements and should be
limited to what they are working on. It is performed in an realistic work setting to make it
an exercise and practice for their future career. Given the direction you take, you will
have the opportunity to encounter a genuine situation of an profession, do stuff and
choose something. You never planned, in short, to be set up with no appropriate
planning. Through this, individuals will know the things they need to do for their up and
future flooding.
