Total War: Warhammer III

Army Limits and Rules of Play Version 6.8
OVERVIEW
The purpose of the Fruit Rules is to promote fair and interactive gameplay between
opponents in a competitive setting. Each section of the rules provides greater context
and detail on what is and is not allowed. The individual faction summaries are guides
for applying the army limits to each faction and contain any faction-specific limits.

Army Limits are rules for army construction that promote balanced armies by
limiting duplicate units and abilities. These limits apply to both deathmatch and
domination modes. In domination mode, these limits apply across starting armies
and reinforcements together as one single army. These sections will answer ques-
tions like, “How many spearmen, archers, spells, characters, or monsters can I bring?”

Rules of Play are guidelines for deathmatch games on land battle maps to promote
fair play between opponents by limiting behavior on 3 basic principles: both players
must attack, players cannot corner camp, and players cannot forest camp. These
sections will answer questions like, “What actions are considered attacking, how
close can I get to the map edge, and how can I legally use forest terrain?”

ARMY LIMITS
Armies must start with at least 400 models. Artillery are counted by their pieces,
not their crew. Summons and decoys don’t count toward army limits. Faction-
wide effects and abilities never count toward any unit, category, or ability limit.

D U P L I C AT E U N I T L I M I T S
Duplicate unit limits determine how many duplicates of a specific unit you can
bring. They are generally determined by the price and type of unit. Unit ranks
or chevrons never affect price limits. Summons and decoys may exceed limits.
Unique limits that don’t match their price bins are indicated on the faction pages.

Multiple entity infantry Multiple entity chariots

Price Price
0-900 5 each 0-1,200 3 each
901-1,100 4 each 1,201+ 2 each
1,101+ 3 each

All other multiple entity units (cavalry, etc.) All single entity units
Price Type
0-1,200 4 each Single entities 2 each
1,201+ 3 each Superweapons 1 each

Mounted characters (lords and heroes) count toward the duplicate unit limits of
their single entity mounts. Legendary lords and regiments of renown count toward
the limits of their base unit. Exalted characters count toward the limits of their
unexalted base unit. Players may not field duplicates of regiments of renown or
named characters (such as Gotrek and Felix).

Each Superweapon is limited to 1 per army. Superweapons include: Chaos Warshrines,

Dreadsaurians, Elemental Bears, Iron Daemons, Luminarks, Royal Hippogryph
Knights, Skullcrackers, Soulgrinders of Tzeentch, and Star Dragons.

UNIT VA R I A NT S
Unit variants are limited to 8 per variant group. Units with minor variations like
added armor or different weapon types are classified as variants. Shielded units
are the same unit as their unshielded variant when they cost more. Marked units
with the same weapon type are the same unit as their unmarked variant.

2
U N I T C AT E G O R Y L I M I T S
Unit category limits are per-army. Units and characters may count toward multiple
categories. Summons and decoys may exceed these limits.

Extended Roster Units 0 Heroes 2

Total Chariots 3 Rare single entities (RSE) 3
Flying ranged units 4 Total single entities (SE) 4
Flying units 6 Total ranged units 12
Ranged units with 360° firing arcs 6 Total marked units for Warriors
Multi-entity ranged cavalry & chariots 6 of Chaos and Beastmen 4

Armies are limited to 4 total single entities. Single entity units (SE) have 1 initial
entity, not as a result of casualties. Multiple entity units (ME) have more than 1 initial
entity. Characters are single entities. Exempt single entities (XSE) don’t count toward
single entity limits. Rare Single Entities (RSE) are limited to 2 each and 3 per army.

Ranged units are limited to 12 total per army. All units with ammunition, except
single entities with only nontargetable ranged attacks (like Khorne Soulgrinders), are
ranged units. Ranged units with 360° firing arcs are limited to 6 per army, including
single entities. Multi-entity ranged cavalry and chariots are limited to 6 per army.

ABILIT Y LIMITS
An army may not contain:
• Duplicates of any selectable item or ability priced above 0 that has a limited
duration and number of uses.
• Duplicates of any selectable spell or rune. Bound spells are not selectable.
• More than 1 passive health draining ability with unlimited duration.
• More than 2 total nets, of which only 1 may be targetable.
• More than 2 flying units with breath attacks.

R U L E S O F P L AY
All judgments and interpretations of rules by tournament administrators are final.
Intentional use of bugs or exploits to gain an advantage is prohibited and should
be punished by admins. Live coaching during a battle (after army selection and
deployment) is prohibited.

3
AT TA C K I N G R U L E
Players must attack at all times. Attacking shattered units is never attacking, and
units that are routing or shattered cannot fulfill the attacking rule.

Multiple entity units including summons and decoys can fulfill the attacking rule by:

• Chasing routing units.

• Shooting ammunition at a reasonable pace.
• Fighting in melee combat.
• Cycle charging at a reasonable pace. Cycle charging is attacking, disengaging
to a reasonable distance, then attacking again to regain a charge bonus.
• Advancing towards the enemy at a reasonable pace.
• Repositioning, regrouping, or maneuvering to attack at a reasonable pace.
• Holding position to allow your army to be shot in open field in the late game
when you are out of ammunition. The late game is anytime after the first major
engagement or a visible half of any player’s starting funds have been depleted.
» Players who choose to hold their position with their entire army and accept
ranged damage may not dodge or screen with single entities.

Single entity units including summons and decoys can fulfill the attacking rule by:

• Chasing routing units.

• Shooting at a reasonable pace with the targetable ranged attack of single
entity units (not characters) that cannot fly or with Ku’Gath and Saytang. All
other characters count only when mounted on those exact units.
• Fighting in melee combat and repositioning, regrouping, and maneuvering to
engage in melee combat at a reasonable pace only when all of your multiple
entity units are dead, routing, or cannot attack.
» Cycle charging with single entities is never attacking. Alternating between
single entities charging the same units is considered cycle charging.
• If one single entity fulfills the attacking rule, others may cycle charge.
For example: players with no remaining multiple entity units may leave
one single entity in sustained melee combat to fulfill the attacking rule
while cycle charging, using breaths, etc. with other single entities.
• Single entities may disengage from units they did not target. Single
entities may directly pursue reasonable targets that attack them in
melee or with targetable ranged attacks, and may chase targets
through and around units blocking their path, including summons and
decoys.

4
Attacking at a reasonable pace requires that there is some purpose to not attacking
faster other than to benefit from something that does not count as attacking (such
as casting spells; using abilities; and regenerating health, vigor, winds of magic, and
barriers). Temporary lapses in fulfilling the attacking rule should be excused. Admins
should strictly enforce the attacking rule on players benefiting from something that
does not constitute attacking and should give wide leeway otherwise.

• Repositioning is allowed when there is intent to improve positioning. Armies

that cannot realistically improve their positioning are expected to engage.
» Maneuvering to get a full surround is allowed.
» Retreating to unite scattered forces is allowed.
» Maneuvering around an enemy unit to engage a realistic target is allowed.
» Walking units to directly advance on the enemy force is allowed. Walking
one unit at a time or taking an indirect route to stall for time is not.
• Repositioning to benefit from something that does not count as attacking,
such as recharging damage barriers, is not attacking at a reasonable pace.
» Dodging and conserving ammunition while repositioning ranged units to
shoot reasonable targets is allowed so long as they do shoot those targets
when presented an opportunity.
» Shooting reasonable targets with some but not all missile units is allowed
so long as there is some purpose to not shooting with all of them other
than to benefit from something that does not count as attacking.

WHITE LINE ABUSE

Players cannot use map borders defensively. Impassable terrain on a map border
is part of that border. Players may not hold or reposition defensively within about
200 meters of a map border. Players don’t have to attack units near a map border.
Administrators should consider the map and battle context when enforcing this rule.

FOREST ABUSE
Players may not hold defensive positions in forests with significant portions of
their army. The attacking rule cannot force players to attack enemy units in or next
to forests. Players may instead retreat to open field from such units until they no
longer affect their army. Administrators should give leeway to routing and rallying
units, to units in patchy forests, and when neither player gains an advantage or
