Cylinder

Option Definition Parts Surface Area

and Volume
Definition
A cylinder is a circular prism. It has
two circular plane surfaces, one at its
base and another at its top. It has a
curved surface in the middle.
The top and bottom of the cylinder
are congruent circles and if we were
cut open and unfolded curved
surface would form a rectangle
shape.

+++
Surface of cylinder
• In a cylinder there are 2 plane
surfaces and 1 curved surface. There
are 2 edges and no vertices.
• The base and top of a cylinder are of
the same shape (circular) and size
(or congruent circles).

+++
Curved Surface a cylinder

Look at the cylinder !

If we open the curved surface a
cylinder, we will find rectangle shape.

+++
A cylinder is a circular prism
because base and top of a
cylinder are congruent circles
Edge of cylinder

A cylinder has two edges, at which

1st edge the two plane surfaces meet with
the curved surface. These edges
are curved edges.

2nd edge

+++
Volume and Surface Area

Because a cylinder is a circular prism

then volume of the cylinder can be
obtained by volume of prism

+++
Volume and Surface Area
Volume = Base Area × height
= Circle Area × height
= (𝜋 𝑟 2 ) × ℎ

= 𝜋 𝑟2ℎ

𝑟
+++
Volume and Surface Area
We can find the surface area of a cylinder from the following net
of cylinder.
𝑟

ℎ ℎ

𝑟 𝑟

𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 +++

Volume and Surface area

The surface area = Base Area + Top area + Curved surface area
= 2 × circles area + base perimeter × height
= 2 × 𝜋𝑟 2 + 2π𝑟 × ℎ
= 2𝜋𝑟 2 + 2π𝑟ℎ

+++
Volume and SurfaceArea
Volume = 𝜋 𝑟 2 ℎ
Surface Area = 2𝜋𝑟 2 + 2π𝑟ℎ
= 2𝜋𝑟 2 + π𝑑ℎ
22
With 𝜋= = 3.14
7
𝑟 = radius
ℎ = height
𝑑 = 2𝑟 = diameter
+++
Example 1
Mathematics Book page 16 no 2
Calculate volume and surface area of a cylinder if :
a. It has base radius 3.5 cm and height 6 cm
b. It has base radius 20 cm and height 50 cm

note :
22
Use 𝜋 = if the number is divisibly by 7
7

+++
Example 1
7 22
a. Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ, with 𝑟 = 3.5 = , and h = 6, 𝜋 =
2 7
22 7 7
= × × ×6
7 2 2
= 231 cm3
Total Surface Area = 2𝜋𝑟 2 + 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
22 7 7 22 7
= 2× × × +2× × ×6
7 2 2 7 2
= 77 + 132 = 209 cm2
so Volume of the cylinder is 231 cm3 and the surface area of the
cylinder is 209 cm2 ++ +
Example 1
b. Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ, with 𝑟 = 20, dan h = 50, 𝜋 = 3,14
= 3,14× 20 × 20 × 50
= 62800
Surface Area =2𝜋𝑟 2 + 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
= 2 × 3,14 × 20 × 20 + 2 × 3,14 × 20 × 50
= 2512 + 6280 = 8792
So Volumeof cylinder is 62800 cm3 and surface area of the cylinder
is 8792 cm2
+++
Example 2
Mathematics Book page 16 no 3
The Volume of a cylinder is 7065 cm3
a. Calculate the curved surface area if its base radius is 5 cm !
b. Calculate the total surface area if the height is 10 cm !

+++
Example 2
a. Because it is given that Volume = 7065 and base radius = 5,
then we can find height of cylinder first.
Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
7.065 = 𝜋 × 5 × 5 × ℎ
If the right side can’t divisible by 7, let’s check the left side 7065 divisible by 22
22
(from ), or 3.14.
7
We get 7065 ∶ 3.14 = 2250, 𝜋 = 3.14

+++
Example 2
Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
7.065 = 3,14 × 5 × 5 × ℎ
7.065
h= = 90.
3,14×𝑡× 𝑡
The curved surface area = 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
= 2 × 3,14 × 5 × 90
= 2826
So the curved surface area of the cylinder is 2826 cm2

+++
Example 2
b. Because it is given that Volume = 7065 and height = 10,
then we can find base radius of cylinder first.
Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
7.065 = 𝜋 × 𝑟 × 𝑟 × 10

If the right side can’t divisible by 7, let’s check the left side 7065 divisible by 22
22
(from ), or 3.14.
7
We get 7065 ∶ 3.14 = 2250, 𝜋 = 3.14

+++
Example 2
Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
7.065 = 3,14 × 𝑟 × 𝑟 × 10
2 7.065
𝑟 = = 225.
3,14×10
𝑟 = 15
Total surface area = 2𝜋𝑟 2 + 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
= 2 × 3,14 × 15 × 15 + 2 × 3,14 × 15 × 10
= 1413 + 942 = 2355.
So total surface area is 2355 cm2
+++
Example 3
Mathematics book page 16 no 4
a. The surface area of a cylinder is 226.08 cm3. Calculate its
volume if it has radius of 4 cm !
b. The surface area of an opened cylinder is 339.12 cm2.
Calculate its volume if the length of base radius = height of
cylinder

+++
Example 3
a. Given that TSA = 226,08 and radius = 4
First, try to find its height
TSA = 2𝜋𝑟 2 + 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
226.08 = 2 × 𝜋 × 4 × 4 + 2 × 𝜋 × 4 × ℎ
by using distributive law :
226.08 = 8 × 𝜋 4 + ℎ , (use 𝜋 = 3,14)
226,08
4+ℎ =
8 × 3,14
4 + ℎ = 9,
h = 5.
+++
Example 3
Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
= 3.14 × 4 × 4 × 5
= 251.2

so Volume of the cylinder is 251.2 cm3

+++
Example 3
b. Given that surface area of an opened cylinder = 339.12
base radius = height of cylinder = 𝑥,
so we will find 𝑥 .
Surface area of an opened cylinder = base area + curved surface area
= 𝜋𝑟 2 + 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
339.12 = 2𝜋𝑥 2 + 2𝜋𝑥. 𝑥
339.12 = 4𝜋𝑥 2 , with 𝜋 = 3.14.
2 339.12
𝑥 =
4×3.14
𝑥 = 27 = 3 3 +++
Example 3
We get r = h = 3 3
Volume = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
= 3.14 × 𝑟 × 𝑟 × ℎ
= 3.14 × 3 3 × 3 3 × 3 3
= 763.02 3
Volume of cylinder is 763.02 3 cm3
