and brilliant virtuosity. He has won first place in ten of the world’s top
guitar competitions, including the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America BOOKINGS OPEN
International Concert Artist Competition. Gorbach moved to Australia in 2015 Public 17 Apr
to teach at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he now leads the
guitar department. He also performs as part of the celebrated New Zealand
Guitar Quartet. For this concert, Gorbach will play selections from Piazzolla’s
Estaciones Portenas, JS Bach’s Suite in C minor BWV 997 (Prelude and Fugue), and
Manuel Ponce’s Schubert-inspired Sonata Romantica.

Astor Piazzolla's gorgeous Five Tango Sensations. In this late work, filled with

passionate restraint and haunted by nostalgia, Piazzolla captures the essence
of the tango. Bartok's extraordinary String Quartet No. 6 is also a distillation, this BOOKINGS OPEN
time of the composer's lifelong study of and love for the folk music of his native Friends 10 Apr
Hungary. Written in 1939, it is full of Bartok's unmistakable energy and rhythmic Public 17 Apr
excitement, piquant harmonies and bold colours. But the lonely Mesto ('sad')
motto which begins each movement reflects the composer's growing despair at
the rise of fascism in Europe – and this was the last work he completed before
emigrating to the USA.
