Electrical Wiring and
Installation
Chapter 1:
Electrical installations: Systems, Standards
and Regulations
3
1.1 What is Electrical Design

Electrical design entails planning, creating, testing, or supervising the

development and installation of indoor or outdoor electrical equipment for a
building or compound of building such as residential, commercial, industrial,
hospitals, schools, universities, etc…

1.2 Electrical Systems in a Building
• Lighting

• Sockets

• Power outlets for machines

• TV, Telephone, Data, Cameras, ….

• Panel distribution and feeder cables….

• Earthing System

• Lightning Protection System

1.3 Electrical Tender Documents
• Electrical tender documents of any building shall include
1) Electrical Layouts
2) Electrical specifications
3) Electrical Bill of quantities

• The tender documents shall be based on electrical standards:

1) Standards when designing the layouts
2) standards when describing the materials and equipment.

1.5 Definition of Electrical Standard
• A standard is a set of the detailed rules, processes, procedures and
guidelines developed tested and determined as good practices for the
delivery of a particular product or service.

1.6 Primary purposes of Standards
• To ensure the protection and safety of property against hazards
(overloads, short circuits, voltage drops).

• To ensure the protection and safety of persons (risk of electric shocks).

• To ensure the continued life of the installation and facilitate its use.

1.7 Wiring regulations in several countries
• IEC: International electrotechnical committee. Used internationally
(Europe, Africa, Gulf, middle east…)
• NEC: National Electric Code used in United states of America and rarely in
some other countries where they have the same voltage range and frequency
(exp. In saudi arabia)
• NF C 15-100 (Low Voltage) and NF C13-200 (High Voltage) National
French code used in French and they are based on IEC, can be used in other
countries having the same voltage range and frequency (exp in Lebanon)
• BS Standard 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations): National British standards,
based on IEC, can be used in other countries having the same voltage range
and frequency (exp in Lebanon)
• In Lebanon, designers used to use a combination of above standards
according to the type of building and according to the requirement of
control

1.8 Standard for Electrical Materials
The VDE mark (from the original name, Verband Deutscher
Elektrotechniker) is meant to indicate safety and quality in electrical,
information, and medical technologies. The VDE Testing and Certification
Institute in Offenbach, Germany, tests roughly 100,000 products from over
10,000 customers worldwide.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA)[5] is the

largest trade association of electrical equipment manufacturers in the United
States.[6] Founded in 1926, it advocates for the industry, and publishes
standards for electrical products.
