1. Description
The materials referred to are high pressure decoralive lam nates (HPL) accord ng to the
European Standard EN 438
HPL are sheets consisting of layers of cellulose fibrous rnaterial (normally papeo
impregnated with thermosetting resins and bonded together in a high pressure process. The
process, defined as a simutaneous applicaton of heat (>120"C) and high specific
pressure(> 5 MPa), provides llowing and subsequent curing of the ihermosett ng res ns to
obtain a homogenous non-porous material(t 1,35 g/cm") wth lhe required Burface finish.
Bascally more than 60 % of lhe HPL consist of paper and the rema ning 30 to 40 % consist
of cured phenol fo.maldehyde res n for core layers and mearnineJormaldehyde resin for the
surface layer,
Both resins belonging lo the group of thermosetting resins are irrevers bly interreacted
through cross linked chenica bonds formed during the curing process producing a non-
reactive, stable malerial with characteristics whch are totally different from those of iis
component parts
HPL are supp ied in sheet form in a varlely of sizes, thicknesses and surface finishes.
Where improved fire retardance is required, the laminale core may be treated with an
ddd nve whrcl. does rot coltain ha ogens.

2. Storage and Transportation

Storage and iransporlation should be carried out in accordance wlth the General Processing
Recommendations for HPL; no specal precautions need to be taken.
For tra nsporlalion, HPL is classifed as a non hazardous produclt no labelling is requlrec.

3. Handling and Machining of HPL

The usual safety requ rements of fabrication and mach ning should be observed wth regard
to dust extraction, dust co leclion, and fire precautions.
Because of the possibilty of sharp edges protective gloves should always be worn when
handlng laminates.
The contacl wth dust fron HPL does not present any special probems, however a small
percentage ofpersonnelmay be sensiiive or even alergic to machining dust in general.

4. Environmental and Health Aspecls in Use

Decoraiive aminates are cLrred and therefore chemically nert.
HPL forma dehyde emission levelis far below the limitforwood based materials. Due to iheir
very ow pemeablity HPL bonded to wood based substrates act as a barrier against
possible formaldehyde emissons coming from the substrates.
There is no migration affecting food and, consequenlly, HPL are approved for contact with

The decorative surfaces are resstant to common househod solvenls and chemicals and
have therefore been used for many years in applications where cleanliness and hyg ene are
imporiant.
The non-porous HPL surface and edges are easy to disinfect wlth hot water, steam and
common types ofdis nfectants used in hospita s and other commercialfacilities.
HPL is an article and not a chemical substance and therefore REACh does not apply.
Never the less it is lmportant to ensure an information exchange wth the raw materal
sLrpp iers on REACh relevant substance propertes.

5. Maintenance
As HPL do not suffer from corrosion and oxidation, they do not need any further surface
protection (lacquers or paints).

6. HPL in Fire Situations

Laminales are d fficult to gnite, do nol melt nor dr p and have properues that retard "spread
of flame', thus prolonging evacuating time.
Due io lncomplete burning, as wilh many organic malerals, hazardous subslances are to be
found n the smoke. However, HPL are capable of meeting the best performance for organic
surfacing materials specified in the French standard NFF 16101 (= at east class F2 for
smoke density and toxicity).
ln dealing with fhes involving laminates the same frefghting techniques should be employed
as with otherwood based building rnaterials.

7, Energy Recovery
On account of their high ca orific va ue (18 - 20 N,U/kg)'1 HPL are idea for thermal recycling.
When burnt completely at 700'C, HPL produce water, carbon dioxlde and oxides of
nitrogen. Therefore HPL comply e.g. with paragraph 8 of the economic law of clrcu ar flow
(Kreislaufvvirtschaftsgesetz, KrWG).
We controlled burnlng processes are achieved in modern, offca y approved industrial
inc neraiors. Ashes ofthis process can be brought to controlled waste disposalsltes.

8. Waste Disposal
HPL can be brought lo conirolled waste disposal sites according to current naiional and/or
regionalregulations.

effects and eco toxicity. HPL surfaces are physiologically
safe and approved for use in coniact wilh foodstuff. HPL need to
