UNIT 8-POWER RESOURCES

SECTION 1

INTRODUCTION
UNIT 8-POWER RESOURCES
Energy:
Energy can be obtained from various sources for example fuels, water, wind, and
sunlight. These are either renewable resources or nonrenewable resources. Energy exists
in various forms, for example heat. light. electrical and chemical. All can be converted
into power which can be used to do work. For example when petrol or diesel is burnt in a
car engine its chemical energy is used to make the car move. Electricity is used to operate
machines and appliances in factories and homes.

Power Resources
Power Resources are those sources through which we can generate energy/ electricity to meet
the power requirements of the country.

Types of Power Resources

(i) Renewable resources (ii) Non-Renewable resource

Renewable Resources
Renewable energy is energy that comes from a source that won't run out they are natural
and self-replenishing and usually have a low or zero carbon footprint examples of
renewable energy sources include wind power, solar power, hydroelectric power
including wave and tidal energy, and bioenergy (organic matter burned as a fuel).

Non-Renewable Resources
A non-renewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be readily replaced by natural
means at a pace quick enough to keep up with consumption. An example is carbon based
fossil fuels, the original organic matter with the aid of heat and pressure becomes a fuel such
as coal, oil or gas.
