Therefore, it is essential to implement appropriate policy interventions to preserve and enhance India's forest cover, thus combating the perils of climate change. Urbanization is a global phenomenon, but _ its magnitude and speed vary across regions. ‘The ecological condition and natural resources in urban areas of several Indian cities, as well as cities worldwide, have deteriorated due to unchecked urbanization. By 2025, it is projected that more than two-thirds of the global population will reside in cities. The green spaces in urban India have suffered as a result of population growth, leading to a growing ‘ j disconnect between city dwellers and nature. Over the past few decades, rapid urbanization has resulted in @ significant loss of forest cover, adversely affecting the ecological balance, economic stability, and public health. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF8&CC) is committed to enhancing forest quality and expanding tree cover to maximize carbon sequestration and mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization. The Ministry has undertaken various initiatives, including engaging the public, to achieve these objectives and bring transformative changes to policies and programs. - Dantewada 8 @ Forest & Climate Change Department Govt, of Chhattisgarh During the World Environment Day celebrations from June 2020 to 2021, the Indian government introduced the Nagar Van Scheme. This revamped scheme replaces the Nagar Van Udyan Yojana launched in 2015 and aims to establish “Nagar Vans" (urban forests) across the country within the next five years. The revised scheme places a renewed ao i i een emphasis on public essaseesne a participation, and multiple agencies will collaborate to implement it. ‘The primary objective is to create forested and green spaces in urban environments by preventing encroachment and degradation of forest and non-forest land within cities or their vicinity. The plan seeks to actively involve local communities and organizations in the creation of biodiverse woodlands to benefit the social and environmental aspects of urban areas. ‘The Ministry's afforestation and tree planting programs have yielded some success in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. However, given the need for a holistic approach, adjustments to current strategies are inevitable. The implementation guidelines for the Nagar Van Scheme have been updated based on feedback from implementing agencies. These guidelines aim to provide a clear understanding Dantewada 9 Forest & Climate Change Department Govt. of Chhattisgarh 1.2 An introduction to "Nagar van Yojna".
