Thank you for joining the Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast! In today’s episode, Dr. Henry Cloud joins us
to talk about his leadership journey and share the key elements of trust that will help you accomplish your
mission.

Leaders Have Two Careers

If you’re good at anything, you’re eventually going to need more people to continue to grow. If you want to
grow, you’ll need to realize you’re in the business of leadership.

According to Dr. Cloud, being a leader is a second career, and you have to study, practice, and fine-tune
your leadership abilities. If you don’t, you will become the cap to your own growth.

There are two key areas leaders should consistently grow in:

1. Learning how to get more results


2. Building meaningful relationships with your team

One powerful way to grow in these areas is to ask, “What’s it like to be on the other side of me?” You can do
this by doing a 360 review.

What is a 360 review?

Leaders need a full circle of feedback. We need to hear feedback from our bosses, our peers, those we lead,
and those at home.

It’s critical to get a good picture of your whole life and get feedback on how you can grow in as many areas
as possible.

Done well, a 360 review is one of the most painful gifts you’ll ever receive.

The Five Key Elements of Trust:

Since 2020, trust is no longer the default posture in the workplace. This is a problem because trust is the
glue that holds our teams together.

In Dr. Cloud’s new book, Trust: Knowing When to Give It, When to Withhold It, How to Earn It, and How to
Fix It When It Gets Broken, he shares the five key elements a leader needs to build trust with their teams:

1. Understanding

Your team will never trust you if you don’t understand their struggles, goals, and priorities.

One of your top priorities as a leader should always be to fight for your people and show them you
understand their challenges.

When someone feels listened to, their neurological system is actually opening up to trusting you.

2. Motive

People have to know you are for them. Your team needs to know you have their back, even when they
aren’t there.

To show your motive is for others, you have to authentically look for ways to help them win. Think about
their future hopes and dreams, and talk to them about ways you can help them get there.

With this, your team will see that your motive is to genuinely make their life better.

3. Ability

Understanding and motive must be supported by ability.

People need to know you can deliver what they’re trusting you to deliver.

Can you be a safe place to share their secrets without judgment or gossip? Can you actually do the project
your boss entrusted you to execute? Can you control your ego and listen to your team, even if you don’t
agree with them?

If someone is trusting you as their boss, friend, or accountability partner, you need to be able to meet their
need in that area.

4. Character

Obviously, without the basic character traits of honesty, integrity, transparency, responsibility, and morality,
trust can’t exist. But when it comes to trusting a leader at work, it’s so much more specific.

It comes down to who you are.

People need to see you have the right character qualities to do the specific things they’re entrusting you to
do.

People have to understand who you are before they’re able to trust what you do.

5. Track Record

Our minds naturally build maps, and those maps help us navigate life. Every interaction you have is helping
build someone else’s map of you, and that map they’re writing becomes your track record.

The best way for someone to know whether they can trust you is to look at your track record and see if you
have a history of doing what they’re entrusting you to do.

Example: If you have a history of missing deadlines, your track record says you can’t be trusted to hit
deadlines.

So, if you want people to trust you in a certain area, intentionally build a track record of trustworthiness in
that area.
