Online Dating

Online dating is an activity that refers to the usage of internet-based platform where people could
meet potential romantic or social partners. This media provides people with freedom to create
engaging profiles while also browsing through several profiles of potential partners.
Subsequently, people are given choices to whether accept or decline the apparent potential
partners: swipe right to say “yes” and swipe left to say “no”. When a couple are matched, they
can freely message each other to establish any kind of relationship.
Brief history
When two youthful, enterprising Harvard students utilized an IBM 1401 computer to launch the
nation's first computer-based dating service in the fall of 1965. Driven by the depressing post-
World War II academic dating scene, the two men created a 75-item questionnaire that eager
candidates might answer. In exchange for mailing in their questionnaires and paying a $3 charge,
singles would get a list of computer-generated mates. Operation Match said that ninety thousand
persons were utilizing their services by 1966.
As technology evolved significantly during 1980s and 90s, the world’s first online dating website
was launched in the form of Match.com. At that time, single man could meet and flirt with
potential matches from all around the world.
Nowadays, there are wide variety of online dating platforms that can be easily found throughout
internet. Moreover, there are over 1.000 online dating platforms (including dating apps and
dating websites) all across the internet. This shows that people find online dating as an efficient
way to establish relationship.
Weakness
Despite how practical and efficient it is, there are few downsides that online dating platforms
might have. For instance, misrepresentation occurs in the environment of online dating platform
since people may not always be appropriately portrayed in profiles. People may exaggerate or
give false information about their looks, personalities, or intentions.
My stance
In my perspective, I think the flow of dating culture hasn’t significantly shift since then. The
essence of this culture is relatively the same which involves a couple who spends leisure in ways
that are suitable to their liking. Furthermore, in terms of value, I assume that the idea of dating
culture is relatively varied depending on how people look at it. It accords to the principles and
rules that groups of people might possess. Some people states that dating is non-sense since pre-
marriage romantic relationship is considered inappropriate. Whereas, some people assumes that
dating can be a trial to build relationship and gain trust of each other.
