The Bacteria Around You and The Effects of Antiseptics 01
The Bacteria Around You and The Effects of Antiseptics 01
Effects of Antiseptics

Ms. Devlin
Introduction:
This Experiment Was conducted to test the effects of bacterial spread against the use of antiseptics.
Similar to all other living things, bacteria need food to survive and develop. By spreading/producing
spores, binary fission, and conjugation, bacteria may multiply. When a cell divides to become two in
binary fission, it replicates its DNA, then puts a barrier between the two sets of DNA, and splits into two.
A plasmid copy is transferred from one cell to another during conjugation. The last stage of reproduction
is known as spore generation, which takes place when bacteria release a copy of their DNA through
spores. (Personal Interaction, Ms. Devlin, 2022) This lab's objective was to observe how bacteria develop
and respond to antiseptics. According to the project’s theory, germs would proliferate until there was no
more food available, and the bacteria that included antiseptics would find it difficult to multiply and
grow as quickly.
Methods:
Kindly see the lab experiment description for the supplies and background needed, "The Bacteria
Around You and the Effects of Antiseptics." Nothing was altered. Similarly, for the procedure please See
the Lab experiment description and guide, as little to no changes were made.
Although Please consider the following alterations: For portion B, four different regions were swabbed
rather than just one. The end result being eight total different subjects/areas swabbed instead of the
four same areas.

It was discovered throughout the experiment that the bacterium in the first petri dish was spreading
throughout the dish at a steady pace. It was observed that the bacteria couldn't grow close to the
antiseptic in the second petri dish. The finest examples of this were in sections A, when the germs were
taken from a chair belonging to Mr. Fogel, and section D, where the bacteria were taken from Blake, and
hand sanitizer was used as an antiseptic.
Discussion:
This lab's goal is to observe how bacteria multiply and how antiseptics impact this process. There is no
way to test that portion of the idea because the experiment was stopped before the bacteria ran out of
food, but the other half of the hypothesis is supported by the fact that the germs grew when given
antiseptics. The bacteria it interacted with may develop more slowly due to the antiseptics, while
bacteria that weren't exposed to them could multiply rapidly and freely. This itself implies that
antiseptics can be used to stop the spread of germs. Utilizing additional samples as well as other
antiseptic kinds and dosages might enhance this investigation. It would be wise to utilize one variety of
bacterium for all the antiseptics in subsequent studies.
Conclusion:
The fact that the bacteria with antiseptics proliferated less than the germs without antiseptics provided
evidence in favor of the idea. This experiment demonstrated how antiseptics may impede bacterial
growth. Additionally, this study demonstrated how some antiseptics are more potent than others. In
contrast to the bacteria treated with Listerine, the hand sanitizer-treated germs displayed a zone of
suppression for all three days, not surprising as the purpose is to kill harmful bacteria.
