Questions

1. You drive your car in a straight line at 15 m/s for 10 kilometers, then at 25

m/s for another 10 kilometers. (a) Is your average speed for the entire trip

greater than, less than, or equal to 20 m/s? (b) Choose the best explanation

from among the following:

I. More time is spent at 15 m/s than at 25 m/s.

II. The average of 15 m/s and 25 m/s is 20 m/s.

III. Less time is spent at 15 m/s than at 25 m/s.

2. A motorcycle moves according to the velocity-versus-time graph shown in

the below figure. Find the average acceleration of the motorcycle during each

of the following segments of the motion: (a) A, (b) B, and (c) C.

3. A child slides down a hill on a toboggan with an acceleration of a 1.8

m/s2. If she starts at rest, how far has she traveled in (a) 1.0 s, (b) 2.0
s and (c) 3.0 s?

4. If a seagull drops a shell from rest at a height of 14 m, how fast is the

shell moving when it hits the rocks?
5. A force of magnitude 7.5 N pushes threes boxes with masses m1 = 1.3 kg, m2
= 3.2 kg and m3 = 4.9 kg, as shown in the below figure. Find the magnitude
of the contact force between:

I. boxes 1 and 2.
II. boxes 2 and 3.

6. A shopper pushes a 7.5-kg shopping cart up a 13° incline, as shown in the

below figure. Find the magnitude of the horizontal force, F → , needed to give

the cart an acceleration of 1.41 m/s2.

7. To move a large crate across a rough floor, you push on it with a force F at an

angle of 21° below the horizontal, as shown in the below figure. Find the force

necessary to start the crate moving, given that the mass of the crate is 32 kg

and the coefficient of static friction between the crate and the floor is 0.57.
8. In the below figure, we see two blocks connected by a string and tied to a wall.

The mass of the lower block is 1.0 kg; the mass of the upper block is 2.0 kg.

Given that the angle of the incline is 31°, find the tensions in (a) the string

connecting the two blocks and (b) the string that is tied to the wall.

9. At t = 1.0 s, a 0.55-kg object is falling with a speed of 6.5 m/s. At t = 2.0 s, it

has a kinetic energy of 38 J. (a) What is the kinetic energy of the object

at t = 1.0 s? (b) What is the speed of the object at t = 2.0 s? (c) How much

work was done on the object between t = 1.0 s and t = 2.0s?
