STAT 2593: STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY FOR ENGINEERS
ASSIGNMENT # 5 FALL, 2023

Note: Due via d2l by 11:59pm on Friday, October 20, 2023.

The following problems might be solved in quite a few different, but correct ways. It is very IMPORTANT that
you WRITE DOWN YOUR ARGUMENTS as well, not merely a numerical answer.

Question # 1: Only 5% of people have Type AB blood. A bloodmobile has 15 vials of blood on a rack. If the
distribution of blood types at this location is consistent with the general population, what is the probability they
find AB blood in
(a) [5 points] None of the 15 samples?
(b) [5 points] At least two samples?
(c) [5 points] Three or four samples?

Question # 2: Statistics Canada provides data on the number of reportable transport accidents involving
dangerous goods. The probability that reportable transport accidents involving dangerous goods in Canada
occur on the roads is 0.30.
(a) [5 points] What is the probability that exactly two occurred on the roads out of 10 reportable transport
accidents involving dangerous goods in Nova Scotia last week?
(b) [5 points] What is the probability that at most two occurred on the roads out of 10 reportable transport
accidents involving dangerous goods in Nova Scotia last week?
(c) [5 points] If you select randomly 50 reportable transport accidents involving dangerous goods, how many
reportable transport accidents would you expect to occur on the roads?

Question # 3: The number of requests for assistance received by a towing service is a Poisson process with rate
of 1 call per hour.
(a) [5 points] Compute the probability that exactly 3 requests are received during a particular 2-hour period.
(b) [5 points] If the operators of the towing service take a 30-min break for lunch, what is the probability that
they do not miss any calls for assistance?
(c) [5 points] How many calls would you expect during their break?

Question # 4: The number of people arriving for treatment at an emergency room can be modeled by a Poisson
process with a rate parameter of five per hour.
(a) [5 points] What is the probability that exactly four arrivals occur during a particular hour?
(b) [5 points] What is the probability that at least four people arrival during a particular hour?
(c) [5 points] How many people do you expect to arrive during a 45-minute period.

Question # 5: A geologist has collected 10 specimens of basaltic rock and 10 specimens of granite. The
geologist instructed a laboratory assistant to randomly select 15 of the specimens for analysis.
a. [5 points] What is the pmf of number of granite specimens selected for analysis?
b. [10 points] What is the probability that all specimens of one of the two types of rock are selected for
analysis?

Question # 6: In a new industrial facility, accidents occur infrequently. It is known that the probability of an
accident on any given day is 0.05 and accidents are independent of each other. If this new industrial facility
begins its function today,
(a) [5 points] what is the expected number of days needed to encounter the first accident in this industrial
facility?
(b) [5 points] what is the probability that the first accident occurs on the the day after tomorrow?
(c) [5 points] what is the conditional probability that the first accident occurs no earlier than on the 5th day
given that the first 2 days are accident-free?
(d) [5 points] what is the conditional probability that the first accident occurs no earlier than on the 23rd day
given that the first 20 days are accident-free?
