A viscosity transducer EVT-10C and a temperature sensor sense the oil viscosity and temperature re- spectively and transmit their signals corresponding to the measured values to the VCU-160 control unit, which compares the received sig- nals with parameter values. The control unit activates appropriate ‘output signals to the steam regulating valve. Should the preset alarm levels be exceeded, an alarm indication is given. Viscochief contral system FUNCTION DESCRIPTION vCU-160 SRV sa Control unit Steam regulating valve (optional) ‘Manual control switch ‘Min. position switch ‘Max: position switch 2.1.5 Steam regulating function The control unit operates a motor-driven regulating valve by using increase/decrease signals (24 V AC). At start up, the system checks the current to the regulating valve. If no response is obtained, the control unit activates a "REGULATING VALVE ALARM" (A11). The microprocessor in the control unit VCU-160 determines when the re- gulating valve is closed or fully open by means of the min. and max. position switches (E and A) in the regulating valve. Manual control of the regulating valve is possible via a switch on the control panel ($3). Itis possible to select “to close’, "to open” or "to freeze" regulating valve at alarm by means of a jumper, see Maintenance and Adjust- ment "Jumper selection table". 3Fu 2Pn ‘Steam regulating principle VCU-160 Gata tS alll’ al FUNCTION DESCRIPTION 2.1.6 Alarm functions ‘Riarm is given for two types ot faut. For external indication of these faults two potential-free contacts for connection to the engine room central alarm are provided. The alarm function is reset when the fault is corrected. The high temperature alarm At and the low viscosity alarm A4 are, however, not reset until the temperature has dropped below the process set value or the viscosity has risen above the procass set value. 1. This built-in transformer supplies Power to the viscosity transducer, rectifier board, regulating valve, contactors in power unit, and the electronic control module. All electronic components are grouped on a circuit board mounted in an aluminium console, forming an easily accessible control module inside the cab- inet. The circuit board holds the six digit display, the LEDs for indicating alarm and operating modes, and the push-buttons for parameter selection and setting, The control module is electrically connected by us- ing removable plug-in contacts, a feature that per mits a high degree of accessibility and easy exchange. Rectifier board The rectifier board XA contains: * Power supply for the current loop interface. The loop is fused with 2 fuses on the circuit board. Current output to the loop =20 mA. * Circuit to check/detect if a currentis floating to the steam regulating valve. If current is detected a contact closes (XA8- XAQ) to indicate to the control module that the steam regulating valve is moving. ‘When the valve is in its end position (fully open) ‘no current is detected as the end position con- tact is opened. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION eu ut Regulating valve manual control switch Control mode switch 2.2.5 Regulating valve manual control switch The toggle switch is used for manual control of the regulating valve (increase/decrease signal). It only works when the control mode switch is in posi- tion "Manual valve operation”, see below. 2.2.6 Control mode switch The control mode switch has five positions corre- sponding to appropriate control modes: - OFF mode - DOmode ‘The controller maintains the temperature set in parameter P8 with alarm limits P9 and P10. Viscosity alarm is inhibited, but viscosity value is displayed. = HFO mode The controller maintains the temperature or the viscosity set in parameters P2 (temperature) or P3 (viscosity). - MANUAL VALVE OPERATION mode When the control mode switch is inthe manual Fun valve operation position, the regulating valve is manually operated by using the toggle switch. = REMOTE mode The VCU-160R can communicate with local VCU-160Land thus work as a remote unit. The control mods switch on the VCU-160L should be in "Remote" position. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION 2.2.7 Alarm reset push-button/Lamp test The alarm reset push-button is used to acknowl edge and reset the alarms. The push-button indicating lamp flashes as long as there is any unacknowledged alarm indicated When the alarm is acknowledged, the indicating lamp changes to steady light, until the fault is rem- edied and rested. Ifthe push-button is pressed for more than 5 sec- ‘onds, when no alarms are indicated, the lamp test is activated for a maximum of 5 seconds, or until the push-button is released. 2.2.8 Function push-buttons Parameter number - stepping ‘The upper function push-button is used for finding the appropriate parameter. The parameter numbers are indicated to the left in the display window and the set values are indicated to the right. ‘Step backwards by keeping increase and decrease push-buttons continuosly pressed at the same time, and step with the upper push-button. - Parameter value - increase The middle function push-button is used to increase parameter value. - Parameter value - decrease ‘The lower function push-button is used to decrease parameter value. ‘When pressing the increase and decrease push- buttons simultaneously, the previous set value is retumed (Regret function). FUNCTION DESCRIPTION @® @ fgg yy oO 0 Display window 2.2.9 Display ‘The display window in the control panel indicates the following functions: A. Three-digit display indicating: * Process temperature in °C or °F. * Alarm type in case of fault. The display shows a flashing light until acknowledged, then it changes to steady light. When the alarm push-button is pressed again, the display returns to normal indication. * Parameter number (as selected on the upper push-button). Three-digit display indicating: * Viscosity in cSt or cP. * Current value of activated alarm function, * Parameter set value. LEDs indicating function mode, i.e. temper ature or viscosity. The function mode is se- lected on parameter P1. The appropriate light emitting diode shows steady light. LEDs indicating actual heater configuration, Le. steam or/and electric heater. LEDs indicating when a set value is reached in the DO/HFO modes respectively by a steady light. When changing from one mode to an- other, the LED indicating "new mode" flashes @ and the "old mode" is steacily lit until the "new mode" is reached. The LED for the "new mode" then changes to steady light and the LED for the "old mode" goes off. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION 2.2.10 Input signals Analog signals are received and displayed by the control unit from a temperature sensor and a viscosity transducer. The input signals are selected for control and monitoring of the process by function mode parameter P1. The selected input signal is compared with corre- sponding parameter values in the microprocessor, which initiates ap- propriate output signals according to the deviation in values. Other input signals received by the control unit are the alarm signal from the external safety switches. There is also a remote communi- cation input. By using this input the VCU-160 also can communicate with another VOU-160 and then work as a remote unit 2.2.11 Output signals Outputs to an external power unit for electric heater are initiated by the control module. By combining the outputs to the power unit, a com- pletely stepless temperature and viscosity control can be achieved. Other output signals are Increase/Decrease to the regulating valve. The alarm functions are activated via potential free contacts. FUNCTION DESCRIPTION Remote and local control units 2.212 Remote unit The VCU-160 control unit can communicate with another VCU-160 and thus operate as a remote unit. The mode selector switch of the local unit must be in the remote position. It also can oper- ate as an indicating unit independent of mode. Parameter P34 has to be set both in the VCU-160L (local) and in the VCU-160R (remote). * The X4 plug in VCU-160L shall be removed and replaced by a spare plug which is sent together with the VCU-160R. ‘The connections shall be made on the new X4 (The one which is removed shall be fixed in the VCU-160 and not connected to the circuit board). FUNCTION DESCRIPTION 2.2.13 Alarm acknowledge and reset An alarm signal is acknowledged by pressing the ALARM push-but- ton. The display and the push-button will then change fo steady light. !f more than one alarm signal appears simultaneously, the flashing alarm condition remains unti the last alarm signal is acknowledged. After acknowledgement of the alarm signal(s), the activated alarm function(s) can be found by pressing the ALARM pust-button. The alarms are then scanned in the same order as they were activated. The display function will return to normal indication when the activated alarms have been scanned. The alarm functions (with the exception of A1, A4, A7, and A10) are reset automatically after acknowledgement when the fault disappears. eT) * ALARM Aung Reser ‘Ae RES unit cisplay and alarm reset push-button’ High temperature failure A1 is reset when the temperature drops below the process set value ‘on parameter P2. Low viscosity failure A4 is reset when the vis- cosity rises above the process set value on pa- rameter P3. Input signal failure A7 is reset when the fault is remedied. Computer failure A10 is hopefully reset by switching the MAIN switch to on/off. (Internal PROM or RAM circuit faults). Power failure alarm AS is reset after restarting the heater, if parameter P31=0. For P31>0 the alarm is reset when acknowledged. External safety alarm A8. The extemal safety switches must be manually reset before the alarm can be reset.
