a) Define mobility. Write its expression and S.I. unit?
b) Define electric lines of force. Give any two properties of electric lines of force.
c) Two charges 4 µC and –16 µC are separated by 9 cm. Locate a point on line
joining the charges where the resultant electric field is zero.
d) Derive an expression for the torque acting on the electric dipole when placed in a
uniform field.
e) What do you mean by equipotential surface? Write its properties?
f) Two charges 3 ×10−8 C∧−2 ×10−8 C are located15cm apart. At what point on the
line joining the two charges is the electric potential zero?
g) Define resistivity. Write its S.I unit? Express the dependence of resistivity on
temperature?
Or
A slab of material of dielectric constant K has the same area as the plates of a parallel
plate capacitor but has thickness 3d/4, where d is the distance between plates. How is
the capacitors changed when the slab is inserted between the plates?

h) The resistance of a tungsten filament at 150°C is 133Ω. What will be its resistance
at 5000C? The temperature coefficient of tungsten is 0.00450C-1 at 00C.
i) Calculate the current drawn from the battery in the given network.

j) A battery of 10 V and negligible internal resistance is connected across the


diagonally opposite corners of a cubical network consisting of 12 resistors each of
resistance 1 ohm as shown in Fig. Determine the equivalent resistance of the
network and the current along each edge of the cube.

3. Answer the following question. 3X8=24
a) Two charges 4 × 10−7 C and –8 ×10−7 C are placed at the two corners A and B of an
equilateral triangle ABP of side 20 cm. Find the resultant intensity at P.

Calculate the electric field of a thin infinitely long straight line of charge, with a
uniform charge density λ Cm-1.
b) Derive an expression for electric field due to an electric dipole at a point along the
equatorial line.
Or
State and proof gauss’s law.
c) Prove that the current density of a metallic conductor is directly proportional to
the drift speed of electrons.
Or
Derive an expression for the energy stored in a capacitor.
d) (a) Define electric flux. Write its SI units.
(b) The electric field components due to a charge inside the cube of side a= 0.1 m
is as shown:

Calculate (I) the flux through the cube, and


(II) The charge inside the cube.

Deduce an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor
when a dielectric slab is inserted between its plates.
e) Calculate the current through the galvanometer connected across P and Q of 10 Ω
resistance with a potential difference of 20 V

f) A network of four capacitors each of 12𝝁F capacitance is connected to a 500 v


supply as shown in the figure. Determine
(a) Equivalent capacitance of the network and
(b) Charge on each capacitor.

Or
Derive the relation between internal resistance, EMF and terminal potential
difference of a cell. 36 cells each of internal resistance 0.5 Ω and emf 1.5 V each used
to send current through an external circuit of 2 Ω resistance. Find the best mode of
grouping them and the current through the external circuit.

g) In the circuit shown, 𝑹𝟏 = 4 Ω, 𝑹𝟐 = 𝑹𝟑 = 15 Ω, 𝑹𝟏 = 30 Ω and E = 10 V. Calculate the


equivalent resistance of the circuit and the current in each resistor.
Or
State Kirchhoff’s rules for an electric network. Using Kirchhoff’s rules, obtain the
balance condition in terms of the resistances of four arms of Wheatstone bridge.
h) Describe briefly, with the help of a circuit diagram, how a meter bridge is used to
determine the unknown resistance of a cell.
In a meter bridge, the null point is found at a distance of 40 cm from A. If a
resistance of 12 Ω is connected in parallel with S, the null point occurs at 50 cm from
A. Determine the values of R and S.
