Newspaper report
1. As a group, decide on a headline for an article about Simon’s death.
2. Brainstorm for adjectives and phrases to use to describe the events surrounding the death, remembering
the ‘house style’.
3. Individually, write an article of 120 words about what happened on the island that evening.
The Daily Mercury is a newspaper which sensationalises its news reports and tends to exaggerate. It emphasises
violence and likes to use lots of adjectives. It is generally antiyouth and welcomes opportunities to attack young
people’s crimes;
The Western News is a newspaper which concentrates on the personal angle and gives a lot of detail about any
individuals involved in an event. It plays down a sensational approach and seldom examines issues surrounding
issues;
The Morning Globe is essentially a serious newspaper; it detests sensationalism and too much interest in
personalities and tries to examine the underlying issues.).

Highlights
Students choose the book’s most powerful pictures. In groups, they describe the five mental
snapshots they would choose for a large poster to advertise the film of the book. Each then
