DCSIM Damage Control Simulator

1
DCSIM Damage Control Simulator

Being mainly focused in naval programs, Meteksan developed the Damage Control (DC) Simulator
to provide a valuable asset for Navies for best practice. Meteksan’s aim is to contribute to naval
damage control training being well aware that the actions of a well-trained crew can lead to survival
in an emergency at sea.

Meteksan’s DC Simulator (DCSIM) ensures a realistic training environment to develop and conduct
damage control exercises as part of damage control readiness and the internationally recognized
commercial and naval standards. Its unique features are increasing the effectiveness of the training,
operational efficiency and maintainability so that you can;

• Train the crew in their real environment (smoke, flooding, rolling etc.) for damage control
• Plan, execute and evaluate different scenarios under different conditions
• Improve the crew’s damage control, communication and reporting abilities through live trainings
• Measure and decrease their response time under heavy (smoke, flooding, rolling etc.) conditions
• Evaluate their individual and team performances under different live training scenarios, including adjustable
hull motion for speed and angle and adjustable water level
• Observe, record and replay trainings through the CCTV system
• Overview their previous performances to plan their next training period and to compare results
• Perform preventative maintenance by recording the usage time of critical components through the
automation system and timely warning to the user for related maintenance
• Perform easy fault-finding system by pin-pointing the faulty components; detects and indicates errors up to
the Line Replaceable Unit level with BITE capability.

Realistic Training Environment

Naval Damage Control (DC) capability is a critical effect for preserving the integrity, stability and maneuverability
of vessels. The key to enable these capacities is a realistic training environment for the ship’s crew to develop
and conduct damage control exercises. Consistent and realistic training produces an optimal level of readiness
that prepares repair party teams to react more efficiently and effectively to actual casualties.

Damage Control Simulator (DCSIM) provides a realistic training environment to develop and conduct damage
control exercises to provide the shipboard personnel as part of damage control readiness and the internationally
recognized commercial and naval standards. DCSIM has unique features that are increasing the effectiveness
of the training, operational efficiency and maintainability. The system provides standardized means to train the
crew from basic up to advanced level with proper and comparable evaluation reports.

Safe and Standardized

Thanks to the state of the art and fail-safe design of the system, DCSIM provides a safe training environment
with adjustable and controllable difficulty levels. The design of the interfaces allows command and control of
the simulator and the training in a user-friendly manner, which prevents failures by operators. The software
and the safety systems operate in a full compliance to provide a safe environment for damage control training.
DCSIM is built in accordance with the current international safety directives, the Regulations for Prevention of
Accidents.

It is possible to configure the number of damages and their types. One of the important properties of our
system is the rolling effect. Damage Control Simulator has 15 degrees rolling with its hydraulic feet to provide
sea effect.

3
Key Characteristics
The simulator resembles part of a warship, and is composed of the hull, motion,
water distribution and control systems. All of the main features of the simulator are
controlled by the Simulator Control System. The properties of the training vessel can
be summarized as follows:

The simulator has sufficient equipment to

General Layout
The platform has two decks to host the wet training areas like the diesel
generator room, mess deck / room, galley, pump room. Including an open
deck, there are also local control rooms, a bridge / damage control center
and passageways.

As soon as the system is powered up, diagnostic controls are automatically

performed and the system is ready for operation. The following actions are
performed from the main control system.

• The angle of roll and speed can be changed,

• Can be stopped in a desired angle and position,
• Or can be moved to zero rest position slowly.

Based on the state-of-the-art design, the simulator provides the opportunity to

monitor, record and brief the trainings for evaluation. The design of the interfaces
allows command and control of the simulator and training in a user-friendly manner,
which prevents failures by operators. The software and the safety systems in the
DCSIM operate in full compliance to provide a safe environment for damage control
trainings.

The software includes predefined emergency situations and predefined responses

of the system to keep the trainees and the complete system in a safe position in
emergency conditions.

5
Control System
The control system permits the operator to select training exercises from
an established program of lessons, to develop new ones, to initiate and
monitor training exercises and to monitor all simulator conditions and
systems.

The real-time PLC-based control system with user friendly interface software is used for fresh
and clean water supply and distribution to training objects like simulation of damages, splits etc.
with the correct pressure and flow. The system controls flow, pressure and relative valve(s) of the
selectable damages, according to the scenario.

After the selection of the scenario (selection of the training / damage) the related valves are
automatically opened to simulate flooding as a requirement of the scenario. The Control System
handles also motion control, ventilation, smoke generation, water treatment, lighting as well as
water supply and safety.

Safety Features
The total equipment is built in accordance with the current international safety
directives, the Regulations for Prevention of Accidents. Safety switches are
available for use in case of an emergency in the command & control room, in
the damage control room, and in the trainer’s observation room.

When any of the manual safety switches are activated, training terminates, the simulator reaches
its start-up position safely and smoothly, and the water and the smoke are discharged.

The system / devices are designed not to fail because of operator mistakes. In these cases, the
operators are warned and the process is not carried out. The devices / units are easily accessible
for maintenance. The materials used in the construction of the simulators and the residuals after
the use of the simulators are not harmful for the environment or human health.

There are a wide range of equipment and instruments in the system for both safety reasons and
control issues;
• Level transmitters
• Temperature sensors
• Control and discharge valves
• Pressure switches
• Emergency shutdown system
• Day/night cameras with infrared spots
• PA system

7
Training Evaluation System
The main components are mobile evaluation panels, PLC-controlled data
collection and evaluation software. There are two sources of evaluation;

Subjective grades: The evaluation is done by a trainer through

1 mobile touch panels.

Automatic grades: The evaluation is done by system

automatically. The goal is defined so that the system automatically
2 detects if the training is completed within preset duration in
accordance with the defined scenario parameters.
