Algebra Challenging Questions for Q4. and Q5.

1. If the sum of two numbers is divided by 15, the quotient is 2 and the remainder is 10. If the
difference of the same numbers is divided by 3 then the quotient is 4 and the remainder is 2.
Find the numbers.
(Answer: The two numbers are 27 and 13.)

2. Some part of a journey of 555 km was completed by a car with speed 60 km/hr then the
speed is increased by 15 km/hr and the journey is completed. If it takes 8 hours to reach,
find the time taken and distance covered by 60km/hr speed.
(Answer: The distance covered by 60 km/hr speed is 180 km and time taken is 3 hours.)

3. The weight of a bucket is 15 kg, when it is filled with water 3/5 of its capacity and weight is
19 kg, if it is filled with water upto 4/5 of its capacity. Find the total weight of the bucket, if it
is completely filled with water.
(Answer: Weight of bucket when it is filled with water to its full capacity is 23 kg.)

4. The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is 24 cm. The length of its congruent sides is 13 cm
less than twice the length of its base. Find the lengths of all sides of the triangle.
(Answer: The Length of the sides of the given isosceles triangle is 7cm, 7cm and 10cm.)

5. The cost of bananas is increased by Re. 1 per dozen, one can get 2 dozen less for Rs. 840.
Find the original cost of one dozen of banana.
(Answer: The original cost of one dozen of banana is Rs. 20.)

6. An express train takes 30 min less for a journey of 440 km, if its usual speed is increased by 8
km/hr. Find its usual speed.
(Answer: The usual speed of train is 80 km/hr.)

8. In the A.P. 7, 14, 21, ....... How many terms are to be considered for getting sum 5740?

9. Ram borrows Rs 4000 and agrees to repay with total interest of Rs. 500 in 10 instalments,
each instalment being less than the preceding instalment by Rs 10. What should be the first
and last instalment?
(Answer: First instalment is Rs 495 and the last instalment is Rs 405)

10. A dealer supplied Walky Talky set of Rs 84,000 (with GST) to police control room. Rate of GST
is 12%. Find the amount of state and central GST charged by the dealer. Also find the taxable
value of the set.
(Answer: Taxable value of the Walky-Talky set is Rs 75,000. Amount of CGST charged by
the dealer is Rs 4,500 and the amount of SGST charged is Rs 4,500.)
11. Amir Enterprise purchased chocolate sauce bottles and paid GST of ` 3800. He sold those
bottles to Akbari Bros. and collected GST of Rs 4100. Mayank Food Corner purchased these
bottles from Akbari Bros and paid GST of Rs 4500. Find the amount of GST payable at every
stage of trading and hence find payable CGST and SGST.

12. Shri. Batliwala sold shares of Rs 30,350 and purchased shares of Rs 69,650 in a day. He paid

21. A shopkeeper gives books on rent for reading. She takes a fixed charge for first two days,
and an additional charge for each day thereafter. Latika paid Rs 22 for a book kept for 6
days, while Anand paid Rs 16 for the book kept for 4 days. Find the fixed charges and charge
for each extra day.
(Answer: The fixed charges for two days is Rs 10 and the charge for each extra day is Rs 3.)

22. Two trains simultaneously start from stations P and Q 500 km apart and meet after 5 hours.
If the difference between their speed is 20 km/hr. Find their speed.
(Answer: The speed of first train starting from station P is 60 km/hr and the speed of
second train starting from station Q is 40 km /hr.)

23. At present Asha's age (in years) is 2 more than the square of her daughter Nisha's age. When
Nisha grows to her mother's present age, Asha's age would be one year less than 10 times
the present age of Nisha. Find present ages of both Asha and Nisha.
(Answer: Present age of Nisha is 5 years and present age of Asha is 27 years.)

24. Sum of reciprocals of two consecutive odd natural numbers is 12/35. Find those numbers.

25. If Zeba were younger by 5 years than what she really is, then the square of her age (in years)

manufactured 700 cars. If every year there is same growth in the production of cars, then

31. A bag contains white, black and red balls. A ball is drawn at random from the bag. If the

probability of getting a red ball. If the bag contains 20 black balls, then find the total number
of balls in the bag.
