Gypsy is a musical adapted from the memoir of striptease artist, Gypsy Rose Lee, whose
stripteases acts are embedded with her wisdom and humor to show her elegance and charm
with the seduction. Gypsy debuted on Broadway in 1959 and has been celebrated for its
powerhouse performances, complex characters, and sharp wit, solidifying its status as one of
Broadway's most enduring and beloved productions. It puts Gypsy’s mother, Mama Rose, in the
spotlight center and emphasizes her influence on Gypsy’s life. The strong resonance of pressure
from family, especially mother, drives me to do further research on this work.
Gypsy tells a story of a mother and her two daughters who pursue to make a star in their whole
life. It narrates the story in a chronological order. With the passage of time, the curtain on the
right side will shift to show the name of the scene and its location. This design blurs the boundary
between their life and the performance they play to emphasize their life center is vaudeville.
Among these characters, Rose Mama always takes control of everything
