Before commencing work, you must read these installation instructions through carefully and make sure
you understand them fully.

We congratulate you on your choice of optional accessories from BMW Motorrad that will enable you to customise
your motorcycle in accordance with your personal preferences.
Safety is invariably an essential prerequisite for extracting full benefit and enjoyment from new accessories. Some work
calls for special tools and possibly a thorough knowledge of motorcycle technology. If you are in doubt consult a spe-
cialist workshop, preferably your authorised BMW Motorrad dealer.
Since we provide you with a multitude of accessories and optional equipment, we cannot cover all equipment spe-
cifications in these installation instructions. Therefore we restrict ourselves to the basic version of the corresponding
model. The removal and installation of other possibly installed accessories is described in the corresponding installation
instructions. Consult your authorised BMW Motorrad dealer if you no longer have access to the sets of instructions you
need.
If you have questions concerning your motorcycle or any of the accessories from our range, your authorised
BMW Motorrad dealer will gladly provide advice and assistance.

Set of hexagon socket bits
Torque wrench

Rear silencer holder
Cheese head screw, M8 x 30

Also required:
Main frame cover

General instructions

CAUTION
Wearing jewellery during work

Remove all items of personal jewellery (rings, chains, wristwatch, etc.) before starting work.

NOTICE
Once the retrofit kit has been installed by the workshop, these installation instructions must be handed over to the cus-
tomer.
Make sure that these installation instructions accompany the retrofit kit when it is passed on to a third party.

77 11 021 Installing bracket for silencer

Additional work: 46 52 510 Removing and installing the rear-wheel stand special tool (motorcycles without centre stand)

Removing rear seat
Remove screw (1).
Raise rear seat (2) slightly at the rear and remove, noting
the lug (arrow).

Removing front seat
Pull latch (1) up.
Work front seat (2) to the rear and remove, noting the
lugs (arrows).

Removing silencer
Slacken the clamp (8).
Remove bolt (6) with forming plate (5), spacer (3) and
nut (7) from holder (4) and store, will be reused.
Remove Sports silencer (1) with clamp (8) from intermedi-
ate pipe (2).

Removing silencer
Slacken the clamp (1).
Remove screw (2) and forming plate (3) and keep in a
safe place, will be reused.
Remove silencer (4) with clamp (1).

Covering or masking off rear wheel swinging
arm
Cover or mask off rear wheel swinging arm (1) where
shown (arrow).

Removing passenger-seat frame

ATTENTION
Use of hard or sharp-edged objects in proximity to
component
Component damage
Take care not to scratch components; cover or mask as
necessary.

Remove screws (1) and lay them safely aside (needed for
subsequent reassembly).
Disengage holder (2) and unclip (not needed for sub-
sequent reassembly).

Remove screws (1) and lay them safely aside (needed for
subsequent reassembly).

Remove screws (1) and remove passenger-seat frame (2).

Installing new cover for rear frame
Position cover (1) on rear frame (2) and install with
bolts (3).

Tightening torques

Cover to rear frame


M8 x 30 19 Nm with cover

Removing protection
Remove the protection (arrow) from rear wheel swinging
arm (1); if applicable, remove adhesive tape.

Removing left footrest system
Remove screws (1).
Remove footrest system (2) from rear frame (3).

Preparing new holder for silencer
Remove rubber decoupler (1) and shouldered bushing (3)
from passenger frame.
Insert rubber decoupler (1) in new holder (2) and install
shouldered bushing (3).

Installing new holder for silencer
Position holder (1) on rear frame (2).
Install screw (3) and bolt (4).

Installing left footrest system
Position footrest system (1) at frame (2).
Install screws (3).

Installing silencer
Lubricate the inner face of clamp (1).

Lubricant

Optimoly TA 18 21 9 062 599

Position silencer (2) up to limit position and tighten bolt (3)


with forming plate (4) until hand-tight.
Align clamp (1) on anti-twist lock (arrow).
Tighten the clamp (1).

Tightening torques

Tighten screw (3).

Installing sports silencer

ATTENTION
Use of unsuitable cleaning agents
Damage to the surface
Clean the outer skin of the sports silencer only with a care
spray recommended by an authorised BMW Motorrad
dealer and a soft, dry cloth.

NOTICE
The lifespan of the insulating material in the silencer de-
pends on engine performance and style of riding.
Consult an authorised BMW Motorrad dealer if the silencer
becomes louder or if its external appearance changes.
Note, however, that slight discolouration of the silencer is
normal. This discolouration is caused by the high tempera-
ture of the exhaust gas.

Lubricate the sports silencer (1) on the inner diameter be-
fore connecting it.

Lubricant

Copper paste 81 22 9 400 794

Connect sports silencer (1) to intermediate pipe (2).


Position Sports silencer (1) with spacer (3) from the inside
on holder (4).
Hold the shaped washer (5) and tighten bolt (6) and
nut (7) hand-tight.
Bring the components into alignment.
Align clamp (8) with screw connection to the vehicle in-
terior and tighten.

M8 x 35 12 Nm

Tighten the screw (6).

Silencer to bracket
M8 x 60 19 Nm with Sports
silencer OA

Installing front seat
Lift latch (1) and insert front seat (2), noting the lugs (ar-
rows).
Make sure that latch (1) is in the bottom position.

Installing rear seat
Hold rear seat (1) in position, noting the tab (arrow).
Install screw (2).

Tightening torques
Rear seat to number plate carrier
M6 x 25 3 Nm

Final check of work performed
Check the following:
The work as performed achieved the intended purpose.
All reservoirs and containers have been filled and all fluids
and lubricants are at their correct levels.
All threaded fasteners released beforehand have been cor-
rectly retightened.
The fuel system is free of leaks.
The lights and signalling equipment are fully operational
and the vehicle is roadworthy.
The brake pads of the front and rear brakes are bedded
against the brake discs.

Function test, engine start suppression


Check
Shift the transmission to idle position.
Switch on the ignition.
Neutral indicator light "N" lights up.
Select a gear.
Neutral indicator light "N" goes out.
Operate the starter motor switch.
Starter does not operate.
Extend the side stand.
Pull the clutch lever.
Operate the starter motor switch.
Starter does not operate.
Retract the side stand.
Operate the starter motor switch when the clutch is pulled.
Starter operates.

Result
Not all test steps completed successfully.
Measure
Check the appropriate parts with the BMW Motorrad dia-
gnostic system.
