Silvestre Revueltas, born December 31, 1899, at Santiago Papasquiaro, State of Durango, Mexico, studied violin in Colima and at the Institute of Juarez de Durango, and composition with Tello in Mexico City and later with Borowski in Chicago. He continued his violin work with Vaslav Kochansky and Sevéik. With Chavez he presented a series of modern music recitals between 1924 and 1926 and later assisted him as con- ductor of the Orquesta Sinfénica de Mexico, After a trip to Europe in 1938 where he conducted programs of his own music, Revueltas returned to Mexico and devoted his entire time to composition. He died on October 5, 1940. “Cuauhnahuac” (pronounced kwah-nah-hwak; the ancient name of the famous tourist center, Cuernavaca) was composed in 1930.
