In every patient care setting whether it be clinical or public health the Dental

Hygienist is performing a patient evaluation. This is a vital part of caring for the patient’s

oral health as it establishes the level of disease specific to each patient’s mouth.

Whether it be total health, gingivitis or periodontal disease each cleaning and treatment

plan is different based on the evaluation.

A patient with gingivitis needs their hygienist to help them reverse back to a

healthy oral environment from the gum inflammation they are experiencing. This

includes discussing different brushing and flossing techniques and increasing those

habits. It can also focus on discussing diet and incorporating more water into their daily

routine.

The evaluation and treatment for a patient with Periodontal Disease is going to

be focused on maintenance. We know as Dental Hygienists that Periodontal Disease

isn’t something that can be cured, therefore we must find a way to maintain it. If unable

to be maintained Periodontal Disease will continue to progress resulting in the loss of

teeth. The Hygienist must be able to change their treatment based on every evaluation

of every patient.
