Although, the team is very aware of
Telegram being a source of meme
creation and distribution among Iranians,
an objective statistical study could not
have been conducted due to the
inherently closed, nature of the platform.

Other than these two channels, memes

are also consumed and made on
Youtube and X(Twitter) though not to
the same level of influence as the former
two channels mentioned.

Statistical Analysis Steps and Methods

1. Our first step was to conduct a search on Instagram and list every page with
over 1K followers that produced, or distributed Iranian memes as the primary
purpose of their pages. Listed, were more than 130 pages. The consensus is
that this list while not exhaustive, gives a representative sample of meme
creation and consumption of Iranian memes.
2. We reviewed sample pages on the list and discussed about how their content
could be categorized. This was when the major categories started to form.
3. After finalizing the categories, we split the list of pages and categorized them
based on their content, each page could be listed for more than one category.
4. The Influence of each category was estimated by adding the number of
followers of pages within the same category, since reach data was not publicly
available for each page.
5. For gender and age groupings of audience among each category, we
requested pages listed under that category to give us their Instagram
generated data for “Reach”. Many responded, and the results you see for each
category is an average of data given by pages of that category weighted
per their number of followers.
