(REFLECTION ENTRY TWO) USE OF LANGUAGE IN MY

ARTICLE

I have realized that each piece of article was written using a different

tone. The tone in the song is one of concern, this was heard in the use of

language such as “weh mhii ago tell my mada”(verse1) and “remember mhii

still go high school ohh gee” (verse1). A worried tone can be detected in a

single statement on the picture “being pregnant as a teenager is a serious

matter”. The tone in the online article can be defined as worried and this is seen

in the sentence “what if their baby has no father” and “how will they finish

school” (line 2-4).

I observed that each piece has a different type of diction that is

appropriate for each pieces. The lyrics of the song contains many phrases such

as “school fren dem” and “tell him fi put all the blame pon me” (verse2) which

has an informal diction that sound appropriate for the context of the song. The

online article uses a formal diction because it is stated in Standard English. It

uses expressions such as “teen should remember though having, having a child

doesn’t end your life” (line5-6) and “teen mothers especially are faced with

many emotional struggles” (line2). This diction sounds appropriate for the

audience because it clearly expresses the information to the public and

encourages pregnant teens. The diction of the statement on the picture is formal,

because the statement said that “being pregnant as a teenager is a serious matter.

REFLECTION – ENTRY 2
During my observation of the use language in my artefacts, I noticed two types

of language techniques almost immediately, tone and diction.

The first thing I observe is that the tone varies in each piece of my artefacts. The

online article has a formal tone, as it is a scholarly, informative piece which

provides clear, objective facts about the causes of child abuse. The author uses

words or phrase to state the causes of child abuse like “Financial stress,

unemployment and poverty”. “Alcohol, drugs or other substance abuse, and

persons having a history of being abused or neglected as a child.”

The picture however, has a tone of desperation, whereas, it is showing children,

expressing with words written in their hands, that they are being abused. Using

Phrases/ Statements like “Stop the abuse, Advocate be the voice, Justice for

all, etc.”
In my video, which is my second piece the tone I received was a concerned one.

Concerned in the sense that the speakers really care about how the children are

being treated in certain homes etc. I also believe that the tone is also critical due

to the fact that the speakers gave their comments based on their views on the

subject. The speakers also mentioned how children who are being abused won’t

speak up to others due to the fact that they are being dependent on parent or

guardians in control for financial benefits or basic needs.

The next thing I observed in the artefacts was diction. The video contains an

informal diction and uses the phrase “everyday she giwi sum pupa jesus lick,

mi a tell uh” making use of colloquial expressions used to capture the language

of a particular time frame or culture. My online article is clearly uses a formal

diction, which also utilize phrases which informs you that some of the causes

can be related to“PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder)” or “Substance

abuse”line 95 and line 101. It also goes as far as to inform the reader to see a

doctor or check in with child advocate agency in order for one to know if their

child/ward was/is being abused. The tone and diction utilized in my artefacts are

appropriate and effective in appealing to the related target audience, as it speaks

to a wide cross section of individuals who struggle with, or are affected by some

form of child abuse.
