c) To allow the Engineer to inspect the Works the Contractor shall give the
Engineer a minimum of 24 hours notice of carrying out the following
activities on site.
d) Products shall be stored off the ground on timber blocks of sufficient size
and spacing to provide adequate support.
f) Products that are stored outside at site shall be stored under cover to
prevent ultra violet deterioration and as recommended by the
manufacturer.
g) The Contractor shall visually inspect all products upon delivery to site
and report any damage to the Engineer.
2 PRODUCTS
2.1 GENERAL
a) Fence height shall be 2.4m to the top of the chain link mesh and 2.8m in
vertical height to the top line of the barbed wire.
c) The strength of line posts, straining posts, corner posts, gate/end posts
and struts shall conform to BS 1722-10.
2.2 WIRES
a) Chain link mesh shall be woven from plastic coated galvanised mild steel
wire Grade A to BS 4102 with 3.55mm nominal core diameter and
4.75mm overall diameter. The mesh opening size shall be 50mm.
b) Line wire shall be plastic coated galvanised mild steel wire Grade A to
BS 4102, with 4.7mm nominal core diameter and 6.4mm overall
2
diameter, having a minimum tensile strength of 1050N/mm .
c) Stirrup wire shall be plastic coated galvanised mild steel wire Grade A to
BS 4102 with 4.7mm nominal core diameter and 6.4mm overall diameter.
d) Tying wire shall be plastic coated galvanised mild steel wire Grade A to
BS 4102 with 1.6mm nominal core diameter and 2.2mm overall diameter.
a) Line posts, straining posts, corner posts, gate/end posts and struts shall
be manufactured from rolled sections complying with BS EN10210-2, hot
dip galvanised after fabrication in accordance with ISO 1461 to a
minimum thickness of 100 microns and then PVC coated to a minimum
thickness of 300 microns. Post and strut sizes shall be as specified or
as detailed by the manufacturer to the requirements of Clause 2.01
above.
a) Do not taper the vertical portion of intermediate posts and hole them for
the attachment of line wires.
a) Do not taper the vertical portion of straining posts and hole them for the
attachment of straining fittings for line wires.
d) Ensure that the straining posts provide a firm bearing for the struts.
e) Ensure that the struts meets the straining posts at a point within the top
one-third of the length of the vertical portion of the straining post which is
above the ground.
a) Fabricate steel base plates from a minimum 3mm thick galvanised rolled
steel plate.
b) Base plates for straining posts, gate/end posts and struts shall project
not less than 50mm from all external faces of a post.
c) Base plates for intermediate posts shall project not less than 40mm from
at least one external face of a post.
d) Ensure that the base plates are so positioned that they do not interfere
with any adjacent straining post.
2.4 GATES
a) Gates shall match the height of the fence. And be fabricated from rolled
sections complying with BS EN ISO 10210-2, hot dip galvanised after
fabrication in accordance with ISO 1461 to a minimum thickness of 100
microns and then PVC coated to a minimum thickness of 300 microns.
Gate member sizes shall be as specified or as detailed by the
manufacturer to the requirements of Clause 2.01 above.
c) Ensure that the top of the gates is approximately level with the top of the
wire mesh fencing and the barbed wire respectively in the fence, and the
bottom of the gates have a ground clearance of not more than 100mm.
d) When the gate is closed, ensure that the space between the meeting
stiles is not more than 25mm.
2.4.2 FABRICATION
a) Ensure that the frame is square with all the corners mitred or saddled.
Do not use bent tubes or radiused corners.
b) Fix vertical braces at not more than 1.2m centres. Provide one central
horizontal brace on the inside.
2.4.3 INFILLING
a) Infilling of the gate shall be with chain link mesh to the same
specification as the fence.
b) Gates shall be fitted with hinges, drop bolts and slam plates, and a
locking device to the approval of the Engineer.
2.5 FITTINGS
Fittings such as eye bolt strainers, cleats, winding brackets, stretcher bars,
staples, long and short droppers for barbed wire shall be hot dip galvanised
after fabrication to ISO 1461 and then PVC coated where applicable to a
minimum thickness of 300 microns all to the approval of the Engineer.
Concrete for post and strut foundations and ground beam shall be Grade
C20 to the requirements of Section 03300 of the specification.
3 EXECUTION
a) Ensure that the top of the fence follows approximately the level of the
ground along the line of the fence.
b) Where possible, set out the line of fence in such a manner that changes
of direction are formed as obtuse angles, no angle being less than 130°.
3.2.1 GENERAL.
a) Ensure that foundation holes for posts and struts have vertical sides,
except that the side of a strut hole adjacent to the post may be sloped.
b) When erecting posts and struts, after insertion of the post or strut,
backfill the hole with concrete adequately compacted around the post
and strut.
c) Ensure that the foundation holes for straining posts are not less than
0.45m x 0.45m in plan, or if round, as may be produced by an auger, but
not less than 0.45m in diameter.
3.2.3 STRUTS
a) Struts must be fitted to all straining posts and gate posts acting as
straining posts in the direction of each line of fencing.
b) Ensure that the foundation holes for struts are not less than 0.30m wide
x 0.45m long in plan.
a) Set the gate posts in the ground to a depth of 0.70m. Ensure that the
foundation holes for gate posts are not less than 0.45m x 0.45m in plan.
b) After insertion of the gate posts, fill the hole completely with concrete.
Ensure that the concrete is well compacted as the filling proceeds.
Ensure that the concrete around posts is brought up to a height of
approximately 50mm above the adjacent ground level and finished with
a weathered top to prevent accumulation of water.
3.3 INFILL
a) Ensure that the top row of wires is secured no more than 50mm below
the top of the chain link mesh. The top row of wires must be double.
a) Ensure that the mesh is strained between each pair of straining posts
and secured thereto.
b) Ensure that the mesh is attached to the line wires either by wire ties,
spaced approximately 150mm apart on the bottom and top line wire, and
450mm apart on the intermediate line wires, or the line wire is threaded
through the appropriate adjacent row of meshes. Provide proper care to
ensure that no meshes are by-passed by the line wire except where
deviation is necessary at the straining posts. Ensure that at least one top
line wire is threaded through.
c) Join chain link mesh by interweaving a spiral and restoring the knuckle
or barb.
d) Fix the bottom of the chin link mesh in one of the following ways as
approved by the Engineer.
i. Ensure that the bottom 0.3m of the fencing is buried vertically, and
the ground surface reinstated.
ii. Cast a continuous concrete ground beam 125mm wide x 225mm
deep in the ground the full length between posts with the top
approximately 25mm below the bottom of the chain link mesh.
Thread hairpin staples through the bottom row of mesh or line wire
at.750mm centres and set in the beam to a depth of 150 mm.
iii. Thread hairpin staples through the bottom row of mesh or line wire
at 750mm centres and grouted into rock or other hard formation to
a depth of 150mm.
