Assignment – I

Subject Code: 18ME72 Subject: CADM

1. Define Automation. As a function of production volume and product variety, explain the
applications of different types of automation and its features.

2. What is CIM? Explain elements of a CIM system.

3. Write a short note on the followings:

a) Cycle Time and Production Rate

b) Plant Capacity
c) Utilization and Availability
d) MLT and WIP.
4. An average part produced in a certain batch manufacturing plant must be processed
through an average of six machines. There are 20 new batches of parts launched each
week. Other pertinent data are as follows Avg. Operation Time= 6min, Avg. Setup
Time= 5 h, Avg. Batch Size= 25 parts, Avg. Non Operation Time per Batch= 10 h. There
are 18 Machines in the plant. The plant operates an average of 70 production hours per
week. Scrap rate is negligible. Determine the manufacturing lead time for an average part
Determine Plant Capacity iii) Determine Plant Utilization iv) WIP

5. With a neat sketch explain the general configuration of an automated flow line.

6. Write a short note on buffer storage and its advantages.

7. With sketch and explain walking beam transfer mechanism

8. A 20-station transfer line is divided into two stages of 10 stations each. The ideal cycle
time of each stage is min .All of the stations in the line have the same
probability of stopping, p = 0.005. We assume that the downtime is constant when a
breakdown occurs, min. Using the upper-bound approach, compute the line
efficiency for the following buffer capacities: (a) b = 0, (b) b = , (c) b = 10, and (d) b =
100.

9. List and explain the control functions that are required for a smooth working of
automated production lines.

10. Using a block diagram, explain the application of computers to design process
11. A triangle is represented by its coordinates (1, 1) (1, 5) & (3, 4). Calculate the coordinates
of the triangle after transformation when
i. Triangle is rotated CCW with respect to origin by 600.
ii. Triangle is scaled with respect origin by 2 units
12. Obtain transformation matrices for scaling, rotation about origin
13. Using a block diagrams explain software configuration of a CAD system
