Biography

Early Life
Raghu Rai was born in 1942 in Jhang, Punjab (now in Pakistan). He developed an interest in photography at a
young age and started taking pictures with his father's camera.
Career
Rai joined The Statesman newspaper as a full-time photographer in 1965. He later became the Picture Editor
for the publication and worked there for over 25 years. During his career, Rai covered many significant events
and captured iconic images. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Padma
Shri in 1972 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Photography in 2012.
