Week 1, DQ 1: Business & Society

In one paragraph, supported by evidence in your text and from other research, describe
two forces that you believe shape the relationship between business and society. Provide
two examples (one for each force you choose). Look for flaws and strengths in specific
examples and applications.

The reason why people go on establishing business is so they can earn and have profits yet this is
not the only thing that organizations should meet and target with their existence. There are other
things that need to be considered as well like giving opportunities for the people within the
community while at the same time not causing any risk to anybody in the area (Fitzgerald &
Cormack). This means that businesses and corporations have responsibility towards the
community where they are operating. The community and the businesses/corporations should
have a working relationship and this includes being ethical and being part of the government in
giving services to the community. Corporations are encouraged to be established in different
communities’ because of their positive effect to the community with the expectation that they
will be ethical or follow procedures that are friendly and harmless to the society. This is a
corporate responsibility. In the United States, expectation towards different corporations and
businesses are too high but this is unlikely to some countries where in corporations are just there
to earn more profit and not to give help in return to the society. The government on the other
hand is there to reinforce all expectation from corporations and make sure they are met
especially the ethical concerns. The government is there to make sure the companies that are
operating are providing benefits to its employees. They also ensure that environmental
regulations are being followed by the management and that safety in the workplace is being
reinforced. There are some issues within the developing countries where in some of the
employees are having issues with salaries and their work environment and yet this seems to be
normal since the government of these countries lacked reinforcement. Clean air act is also
needed to reinforce especially if the company is a factory establishment where in air pollution is
apparent. The government recognizes the important role of corporations in helping out
communities and providing opportunity yet they still want to make sure that nothing gets
sacrificed along the process.
