Patient: Hi doctor, thank you for seeing me today.

Doctor: Hello William, how can I help you today?

Patient: I’d like to switch my medication for my type 1 diabetes. I want to change to a generic insulin. I saw on the internet
that I can save a whopping $450 a month!

Doctor: Not so fast, William. I would caution against making a health decision based on an internet search. A generic drug
may not be the answer for your treatment. It may not have the same pharmacokinetic profile as its brand-name counterpart.

Patient: Well I don’t know what ‘pharmacokinetic profile’ means. I do know that generics must have the same ingredients as
the original drug, right?

Doctor: Pharmacokinetic profile just means how a drug moves through the body. Yes, generic drugs must contain the same
active ingredients as the original formulation. However, your current insulin manages your condition perfectly doesn’t it?

Patient: Yes, it does, but it costs an arm and a leg!

Doctor: I must follow medical guidelines and prescribe the medication that best suits your health requirements.

Patient: When I was younger, my mom lost her job. It was stressful figuring out how to pay for my medicine. I am facing the
same problem my mom had, but back then insulin was ten times cheaper.

Doctor: Unfortunately, my hands are tied. I am so sorry William.

Patient: Now that I can’t afford my insulin, I’ve started rationing it. I feel like I’m between a rock and a hard place.

Doctor: I have to warn you against rationing your prescribed insulin. Your health will deteriorate irreversibly.
