Difference between Formal and Informal Words

In my opinion, the difference between formal and informal words can be understood in several
points:

1. Function
The word formal is often used in serious or official situations. Whether in written or oral form.
And usually used for professional purposes.
Meanwhile, the word Informal is often used to communicate in more relaxed situations, for
example when talking or chatting with family and close friends.

2. Rules
Formal words have several rules that must be followed, including;
a. Grammar must be correct.
b. Does not use contractions, which are abbreviated combinations of words.
c. Don't use slang.
d. Avoid first person pronouns.
e. Use standard punctuation.
f. Avoid using connecting words at the beginning of sentences.
Meanwhile, informal words do not have to follow the rules above, or can be said to be freer.

3. Choice of words
The difference between formal and informal English also lies in the choice of words.
For example :

 Answer [Informal] vs Response [Formal]

 Funny [Informal] vs Humorous [Formal]
 Give [Informal] vs Provide [Formal]

4. Intonation

When used to communicate orally, formal language often uses intonation that tends to be flat or
monotone. Meanwhile, informals more often use intonation that is cheerful, expressive and not
monotonous.

Examples of Formal and Informal sentences :

 What's up? [Informal] vs How do you do? [Formal]

 Ola’s new phone is lit [Informal] vs Ola has a very nice new phone [Formal]
 Nice to meet you [Informal] vs It's a pleasure to meet you [Formal]
