Normally, the correct answer is the response with information that corresponds to the question word. Various question types often asked in Part 2 will be discussed from Day 6 to Day 13. Who questions ask about people, their positions, or groups of people. Typical responses to this question type are about names of people. The short conversations are between two or more people and usually about common situations in business and everyday life. Some conversations may be provided with a graphic. In Part 3, it is essential that you go through the questions of a conversation before it begins, especially for longer conversations, 3-people conversations, or those with a graphic. Pay attention to connective phrases used in the conversation. But/However/Actually/[In fact] is used to show the contrast between the ideas before and after it. So/Then is used to present the result of something mentioned earlier. In many cases, the clue to the answer can be found there. Make sure that you know who the question is asking about, the man, the woman, or another person. In some cases, even though you can understand the conversation well, you might end up choosing a wrong answer just because you have incorrectly determined who the question is really about. Finally, if a choice contains a sentence that occurs in the conversation, it is very probably incorrect. Incorrect answers in this part often have a word, a phrase, or an idea that you hear in the conversation. Don't choose an answer just because it contains words from the conversation. ieee A\ Questions about people In many cases, it is important to identify the third person, ie. the focus of the conversation, rather than the names of the two speakers in the conversation. Therefore, you need to listen carefully for the main verb in a Who question to get to know the person the question is really about. + Who most likely are the speakers? + Who gave the man an offer? B_ Questions about time The clue to a correct answer may be found before or after some connective words or expressions in the conversations, In case the connective word or expression conveys an affirmative message (okay, yes, etc.), the clue may be found before it. If the word or expression conveys a negative message (but, actually, etc.) or aims to suggest something such as how about ~?, why don't we ~?, the clue comes after it + When is the report due? + What time does the staff meeting start? bay 14 57 C_ Questions about locations in many cases, the locations shown in the choices are mentioned in the conversation. it is, therefore, important to pay attention to the subjects and the verbs related to the question in order to find the correct answer. + Where does this conversation take place? + Where did the women probably leave her luggage? D_ Questions about methods This question type may ask not only about the means and methods but also about duration, frequency, quantity, number, etc. In addition, the choices may also look similar to each other. Therefore, it is important to understand how the conversation develops to find the correct answer. = How did the woman get to the place? + How should the man order the supplies? E Questions about reasons ‘As answer choices of this question type are often long, you should read ahead not only the question but also the answer choices. A clue to the correct answer may come after phrases such as the reason is, due to, and because, + Why did the woman have to move? + Why does the man want to speak to the manager? F what questions Pay attention to the first part of the conversation as you can usually find the main topic there. When the conversation is long and the questions are more difficult, the main points may be repeated in one way or another in the later part of the conversation + What are the speakers discussing? + What's wrong with the flight reservation? G Inference questions (questions about the implied meaning of something in the conversation) For this question type, understanding the meaning of the detail asked in the question will not be enough to find the correct answer. Instead, make your decision based on the parts before and after that detail in the conversation, and the whole conversation when necessary. + What does the man mean when he says, “I can make it"? + What does the woman say, "What a relief"? H_ Questions about graphics provided For this question type, you need to make use of the information in the graphic and connect it with the related part you hear in the conversation to identify the correct answer. + Look at the graphic. What shoe sizes did the woman order? + Look at the graphic. Which floor will the man and woman go to next? 58 © Warm-Up Practice with Short Questions In Part 3, it is essential that you go through the questions before the conversation begins. Part 4 talks are often about common situations in business and everyday life. They may be telephone messages, meeting reports, speeches, announcements, radio news reports, advertisements, etc Part 4 may appear more challenging as the recordings in this part are indeed longer than previous parts, However, sentence structures in Part 4 are not more complicated nor are traps of “similar sounds" set up to trick you. You can get a high score if you take regular practice and learn to concentrate hard on how ideas are organized and developed in these short talks As with Part 3, you should read Part 4 questions ahead. It is also important to tell the differences between overview questions and detail questions. For talks with a graphic, you must consider both the questions and graphic to make your decisions. For overview questions, you need to concentrate on the first part of the talk and get used to the ways ideas can be paraphrased, For detail questions, you need to be able to identify whether to focus on specific dates, schedules, numbers, etc. or some characteristics of people or things mentioned in the talk You should focus on both the talk and its questions at the same time. Also, avoid marking your answers while the talk is being given. Doing that may cause you to miss the important details necessary to answer the next question. Keep on listening until the talk is finished. Once it is, begin to mark your answers as quickly as you can so that you can find time to look ahead at the questions of the next talk.
