THE NATUREN OF GOD
Introduction

Attributes of God.
1.God is Omnipresent. This means that God is present everywhere, at the same time. The writer
at Psalm 139 states that no matter where we go, God is there. Psalm 139 vs 7-12 God observes
everything that we do.
2.God is omniscient that is he knows everything Psalm 139 vs 1-6, Psalms 147 vs 5. He knows
not only our actions but our every thoughts. When the bible speaks of God’s foreknowledge
(Isaiah 42 vs 9) it means He knows all things possible as possible, all things certain as certain.
3. God is omnipotent – that is He is all-powerful and has ultimate authority over all thins and all
creatures (Jer 32 vs 17, Matthew 9 vs 26). This doesn’t mean however that God uses all His
power and authority at all times for example, God has the power to destroy sin but he has chosen
not to do so until the end of history (1 John 5 vs 17). In many ways God uses His power
channeling it through His people. In this case His power is dependent on our degree pf
availability and submission to Him (Eph 3 v 20.)
4.God is transcendent, this means God is different and independent from his creation (Ex 24 v
9-18, Isaiah 6 v 1-3). His being and existence is infinitely greater and higher than the created
order. He dwells in perfect existence far above what he has made. He Himself is uncreated and
exists apart from creation.
5.God is eternal, that is He is from everlasting to everlasting (Ps 90v 1-2). There was never a
time either in the past or the future when God did not exist or will not exist. He is not bound by
human time therefore is best described as” I AM ‘(Exodus 3 vs 14).

6.God is unchangeable, that is there is no change in His attributes, in His perfections and in His
purpose for humankind (Numbers 23 v 19). This doesn’t mean however that God never alters His
temporary purposes in response to the actions of Humans. He may, for example, alter His
intentions of judgement because of the sincere repentance of sinners. (Jonah 3vs 6-10).
Furthermore, He remains free to respond to the needs of human beings and to the prayers of His
people, The Bible often speaks of God changing His mind as a result of diligent prayer of the
righteous. (2 King 20 vs 2-6).

7.God is perfect and Holy – He is completely without sin and absolutely righteous (Lev 11 vs
44-45). Adam and Eve were created without sin but with the capability of sinning. God on the
other hand cannot sin (Tit 1 vs 2, Heb 6 vs 18). His Holiness also includes His dedication to
carrying out His purpose and plan.

8.God is Triune – He is one God (Det 6 vs 4) who has manifested Himself in three divine
persons, Father, Son and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28 vs 19). Each person is fully divine, equal
with the other two, yet they are not three God but one, See Matthew 3 vs 17.

Names of God

`1. Elohim means God the Creator (Genesis 1:1)

Elohim is the Hebrew name for God and it is found in the very first sentence of the Bible. In the
beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1.This ancient name of God
contains the idea of God's creative power as well as His authority and sovereignty. When you
pray to God The Creator, you are remembering that God is the powerful creator who can create
order out of your chaos. He can create a beautiful masterpiece out of your life.

2. Yahweh

Yahweh is the Hebrew name for God meaning I Am, The Self-Existent One. I Am. He was. He
is. He always has been and always will be. He is the Self-Existent One with no beginning and no
end.We first come across the name Yahweh-I Am with the infamous conversation between Moses
and God at the burning bush. God replied to Moses, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of
Israel: I am has sent me to you.” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel:
Yahweh,[b] the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of
Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.
Exodus 3:14-15.

When you pray the name of God Yahweh, you are praying to the One true God that has always
existed and will have no end.

3. El Roi
El Roi is the Hebrew name for God meaning the God who sees me. We discover this name of
God in Genesis 16:14-15. We meet Hagar, an Egyptian slave, who encountered God in the desert
and addressed Him as El-Roi, "the God who sees me."Hagar had been badly mistreated by Sari,
Abrahams's wife and she had run away.

Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You
are the God who sees me.”[a] She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?”14 So that
well was named Beer-lahai-roi (which means “well of the Living One who sees me”). It can still
be found between Kadesh and Bered. Genesis 16:13-14.

When you pray to God as El Roi, you are praying to the God who sees you in every situation.
Hagar called God by this name when He saw her in her distressing situation and provided for her.

4. El Shaddai

El Shaddai is the Hebrew name for God meaning The All-Sufficient One, God Almighty. This is
the name that God revealed to Abram when He established an everlasting covenant with him and
his descendants.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai
—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.2 I will make a covenant with
you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.” Genesis 17:1-2.

When you pray to El Shaddai, you are praying to God Almighty, the all-sufficient One. He has
everything that you need to sustain you.

5. Yahweh Yireh

Yahweh-Yireh is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Lord will provide.

Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and
sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son.14 Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh
(which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On
the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22:13-14.

When you pray to Yahweh Yireh, you are praying to the God who sees your situation beforehand
and is able to provide for your needs.

6. Adonai-Lord And Master

Adonai is the Hebrew name for God meaning Lord and Master. It is the generic term for lord in
Hebrew. It is first seen in scripture when Abram, longing for an heir, cries out to God.

I said to the Lord, “You are my Master!

Every good thing I have comes from you.” Psalm 16:2.

When you pray to God as Adoni-Lord and Master, you are coming to His throne with a renewed
awe of His greatness. God's desire is for you to submit to Him, to learn of His ways, so that it
will go well with you in this life. Abram called out to God as his Master. Abram called out to
Adoni, who is sovereign and who held the answers to everything in his circumstances. We can be
like Abram. We can call out to our Master for help in our seemingly impossible situations.

7. Yahweh Rapha

Yahweh Rapha is the Hebrew name for God meaning the Lord who heals. God is our Healer, in
both body and soul! He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and
do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all His decrees, then I will not
make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”
Exodus 15:26.This name assures each of us that our Heavenly Father wants to restore us to
wholeness. When you pray to God as Yahweh Rapha, you are praying to the God who heals. God
is our Healer. God doesn't want you to carry any bitterness or to be sick in any way.

8. Yahweh Nissi

Yahweh Nissi is the Hebrew name for God meaning, the Lord is my banner. The name Yahweh
Nissi only appears once in the Bible in Genesis 17:15. Moses built an altar there and named it
Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”). Exodus 17:15.Banners are like
today’s flags. They are lifted to a height where we can see them as a reminder that symbolizes:
security, hope, and freedom. In ancient times these banners could be seen from a far distance and
they served as a rallying point for troops before a battle. When you pray to God - The Lord Is My
Banner, you are remembering that God walks with you through all your battles. He is powerful
enough to overcome any enemy.
