Article: How social media Big Data Can Improve Suicide Prevention
The article highlights the application of big data analytics in uncovering information through
social networking sites about individuals at risk of suicide, and guides on how to utilize these
analytics to prevent such incidents. This study has been conducted to understand the engagement
of suicide related groups on online platforms using publicly accessible data from a large social
networking site. A supercomputing system, high-speed internet connection, high-performance
cluster and linguistic toolkit in search algorithm were used for this big data analysis. During the
span of three months, it was observed that over a half million young adults followed at least one
of the 24 groups, with more than 70 thousand young adults following anywhere from two to
fifteen groups. The predominant age group was of their early 20s and most followers were
females than males. The research underscores that suicide groups on online platforms are a
concerning public health issue that has been under-addressed and calls for the need for social
media-based suicide prevention strategies. It acts as an example of how effective data mining in
this digital age can help us advance our understanding and approach to tackling mental health
challenges.
