PHRASAL VERBS

A phrasal verb in English is a type of verb that is created by combining a regular verb with one or two
other words, typically a preposition or an adverb. The additional word(s), often referred to as particles,
can change the meaning of the original verb. Here are some examples:

 “Look up” (verb + adverb): To search for information3.

 “Look after” (verb + preposition): To take care of someone or something3.
 “Look forward to” (verb + adverb + preposition): To anticipate something with pleasure3.

Phrasal verbs are very common in English, especially in more informal contexts. They can sometimes
be challenging for English learners because the meaning of a phrasal verb often doesn’t directly relate
to the meanings of its individual parts2.

 Wake up > put up with

 Get up > calm dowm
 Turn on > get back to

My daily routine

Every morning, I wake up at 6 a.m. and get up from my bed. I turn on the coffee machine and
while waiting for my coffee, I turn off my alarm. Sometimes, I stress out about the day ahead, but I
try to calm down and focus on the tasks at hand.
I have a habit of coming up with a plan for the day while sipping my coffee. I bring up any
important tasks that need to be done and make sure they stand out in my planner. If there’s something
I don’t understand, I look it up on the internet to figure it out.
Sometimes, I run out of milk for my coffee, and I have to throw it away and settle for black
coffee. But I put up with it and get back to my routine. I look forward to the end of the day when I
can relax.
I fill out my daily report before leaving work. I get along well with my colleagues, and we
often help each other get rid of any problems we encounter. Sometimes, I have to turn down
invitations for after-work activities if I have other commitments. When I get home, I turn up some
music and go over the events of the day. I watch as the sun goes up and then goes down, marking the
end of another day.
