Author's presentation
My name is Biagio Fasano; I was born in the mid-1960s in Chieri, a province of the magical city of Turin. I began to take a
serious interest in magic in 1984 when, in my first year of high school, I happened to read an exciting article in a well-known
science magazine, dedicated to the late, great Illusionist, Mathematician, Philosopher and Scientific Divulgator: Martin
Gardner. It totally thrilled me and captured all my attention, so much so that it soon led me to read voraciously all the
numerous publications available in those years, first in Italian and later also in English. Since then, Mathematical Magic has
never left its place in my heart, and little by little I also became interested in all the other disciplines of the Art of Magic,
especially Card Magic and Mentalism.

In 1990, a friend introduced me to a Magic Circle in Turin: “Circolo Amici Della Magia” (CADM), at the time presided over by
Vittorio Balli (aka Victor) and Gianni Pasqua (aka Roxy). I thus began to attend assiduously that wonderful environment that
allowed me to get to know so many incredible artists and performers: quick chargers, mentalists, cardicians, illusionists, both
professionals and amateurs. In this environment, I made friendships that, for the most part, continue to this day. For more
than 30 years now, this passion has not left me; on the contrary, it has grown to such an extent that I have recently been able
to teach Magic in workshops created especially for primary school children, and Mathematical Magic, in particular in
secondary schools. At CADM I have the great honor and pleasure of being a teacher of Card Magic (in particular of Semi-
Automatic and Mathematical Effects, which always remain among my main interests) and of Mentalism (my other greatest
magical passion). At the end of 2022, the Bartolomeo Bosco Magic Club (CMBB of Turin) asked me to hold a new Mentalism
Course covering Semi-Automatic and Contactless Effects with Playing Cards.

As an author, I publish my works, both in Italian and in English, in the form of eBooks, on www.Lybrary.com, and Video
Tutorials, on www.PenguinMagic.com. I sign my works both with my real first name and with the stage name B. Magic, chosen
in 2020 when, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, I decided to finally open myself up to social media and create a
YouTube Channel, christened for the occasion "Magic in Quarantine", which you can still find today at this link:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnm12dlUmt53YHUZesiLnFw

Here you will find, among other things, videos of more than 15 original card magic effects, created by myself, which are
completely AUTOMATIC (based on principles of a mathematical nature, often well disguised). They are accompanied by the
corresponding Tutorial, in case it is necessary for a better understanding, as each effect can take place directly in the hands of
anyone who can carefully follow the instructions given in the video...

In the course of this cursed Covid pandemic, thanks to Mariano Tomatis, we created the group of "Pills Wizards" inspired by
his "Mesmer in Pills" videos in order to deepen our knowledge of their aspects, principles and methods and to be able to create
new effects inspired by them. This little group now has three members, all lovers of Mathematical Magic, Writers, Authors
and Magicians, Professionals and Amateurs, each one able to make their own incredible contribution to our discussions,
insights and conception of magical effects.

In addition to writing for CICAP's prestigious magazine "Magia" and for UMI, I am currently working on other projects,
including a book of Mentalism with playing and business cards, entitled "Bending Minds", written six-handedly with my "Pills'
Wizards" friends Renzo Grosso and Davide Rubat Remond, and of which my effects "R.E.A.C.T. Reloaded" and "The Unusual...
SUSPECTS" are part of...

I am also pursuing an ambitious project that I have called "Contactless Automatic Card at Number" and which, at the beginning
of 2023, already has no less than seven Volumes on the theme defined in card magic as "A.C.A.A.N". (Any Card At Any Number)
that take place entirely in the hands of the spectator: the illusionist will simply provide him with the tools (usually a simple
pack of cards prepared for the performance, or at most two decks, some dice or numbered cards...) and will not touch any of
them again, until the end of the experiment.

Since 2022 I am continuing to successfully bring my Lecture to Italian Magic Circles (but I have also been to Lugano, Switzerland,
and San Marino), performing and explaining my best MENTALISM and CONTACTLESS effects with cards (the Virtual trilogy of
which Oil & Water is the most significant representative).

In case you are interested, you can find these and all other effects of mine, published in English on Lybrary.com and
PenguinMagic.com, as video downloads and E-books:

What is the “Contactless Automatic Card At Number” Project?

This series of eBooks, originally conceived in the summer of 2020 for an "ACAAN Contactless Project" of
mine, is linked by the theme "A.C.A.A.N." (Any Card at Any Number")
I really like this magic theme, but often the best effects require great technical skill and a high level of
knowledge of card magic and showmanship.
As the lover of Mathematical Magic that I am, I really like, whenever possible, to try to achieve a high
emotional impact on the audience, without having to make use of difficult techniques. What about, then,
a performance that happens only in the hands of the spectator? For me, that kind of hands-off effects
proved to be a dream and a challenge right from the start, even more so after experiencing the nightmare
of the Covid-19 pandemic!
Thus, this became my goal after setting some simple rules:

1. The deck of cards in use may be pre-ordered or gimmicked in some way, but
however it is, it must always be possible to show it to the audience (and in the case,
given quickly to a spectator to examine).
2. Once the cards have been (falsely) shuffled, the deck is given to a spectator and the
performer will not touch it again until the end of the effect.
3. The performer will simply provide all the instructions for the viewer to follow so that the
effect can take place in his or her own hands.
4. Viewers will truly believe that they have (almost) complete freedom in their choice of
both number and card.

What you will now find in this "CONTACTLESS AUTOMATIC Card At Number Vol. 6" are the detailed
explanations of THREE OF MY NEW A.C.A.A.N. EFFECTS, designed with the intention of complying entirely
with those 4 rules mentioned above:
B.F. (Back & Front) ACAAN
Impromptu Countdown ACAAN
ACAAN For Tea Time
As long as I have new ideas, I will still try to add more of my own effects always on this card magic theme
that I particularly love.
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, you can contact me at my Facebook account, or
through an e-mail at: biagio.fasano.to@gmail.com
Thank you for your trust, and I really hope you will enjoy these A.C.A.A.N.s, at least as much as I enjoyed
creating and performing them both for audiences and for colleagues and illusionist friends.
B.F. (Back & Front) ACAAN
Effect:
The illusionist, after showing the audience a dozen numbered cards bearing numbers from 1 to 12 on one
side and small numbers, both positive and negative, on the other side, and quickly shuffling them, hands
the bundle to a spectator so that, through some cutting, redistribution and flipping, he can generate
random numbers that will be added together and the resulting NUMBER will be noted. The magician will
then draw a deck of 52 cards from the case, show it and quickly shuffle it, and then invite the same
spectator to cut it at will. He will then be instructed to point to a CARD in a similarly random manner,
following this simple procedure: he can raise the deck at any point and two cards will be drawn: from the
top of the remaining deck on the table the top card will indicate a VALUE and, from the bottom of the
raised pack, he will take the other card, again at the point where he cut, to indicate a SUIT.
Magically, by counting from the top of the deck just that number of cards that had been noted, the
spectator will arrive at the card indicated just before based on his (or her) choices!

Setup:
It will first be necessary to prepare a bunch of 12 blank cards or white papers, on which the wizard will
first take care to write with a marker, clearly and very visibly, the numbers from 1 to 12.
Then turning the same cards over to the back, on each of them will be respectively ((starting with the one
with the 1 on the back going all the way to 12): 1, -2, 2, -1, 1, -2, 2, -1, 1,-2, 2, -1
(Fig. 1, and Fig.2 showing the same cards turned to the other side):

Figure 1
Figure 2
In addition, the 52-card deck will also have to be prepared according to a special variant of the Si- Stebbins
stack: the suits will follow the order Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds (mnemonic aid: "SHoCkeD") but the
values of each individual card instead of increasing from 3 to 3, as in the well-known stack, will boast a
difference between them of 5 points. This will produce the following resulting order of the stack:

aSxChZrJbTyDi
NsKcUzEjOtLdV
nFkPuMeWoGlQv
AfXpHmRwBgYqI
The order of this deck will eventually have to be reversed completely, stacking the cards on the table one
by one, as if counting them, to get this new stack that will be hardly recognizable even to an experienced
audience of magicians (Fig. 3):
Figure 3
Please note that it is also possible to use a Si-Stebbins deck for this effect, however I personally prefer to
perform it using the above "magician-fooler" setup!

Performance (and Method):

The magician announces that he wants to attempt an experiment in card magic completely in the hands
of the spectator whom he will invite to his side, then shows a series of cards numbered progressively from
1 to 12 (1 at the top and 12 at the bottom) and which show small numbers on the opposite side, some
positive and some negative. After performing a false shuffle that can preserve its cyclic ordering, for
example, a Charlier or an Optical shuffle, the illusionist hands the bundle of cards to the spectator, inviting
him to cut it at will and complete the cut.
The conjurer will have to note whether the number shown on the card now at the top of the deck, at the
completion of the cut, is EVEN. If it is not, he will have a second or even a third cut repeated, and in the
unlikely event that an odd number ends up at the top again, he will ask the spectator to turn the deck to
the opposite side and to pass from bottom to top, either in a block or one at a time, exactly that number
of cards indicated (thus secretly achieving the necessary goal of having an even number, between 2 and
12, shown on the card at the top of the deck)
He will then, if necessary, turn all the deck on the other side (the one with only the numbers 1 and 2, both
positive and negative) and deal the cards one by one on the table, stacking them alternately ln two new
piles (the magician can secretly verify that positive numbers will end up in one pile and negative numbers
in the other). When finished, the spectator can reassemble the deck by stacking the two piles in the order
he prefers. He will again turn over the deck (side with the numbers from 1 to 12) of cards and deal them
one by one again, but this time stacking them in 4 different bundles. The viewer may choose one of the
two stacks placed at the end, left or right, and must turn it over and shuffle it with the one next to it, never
turning over the cards from the latter. Having completed the shuffle, he will again choose a bunch placed
at the end, turn it into a block and shuffle again with the one next to it, the middle. Finally, he will choose
which one to turn, of the only two stacks left, and shuffle it with the remaining one (ideally, it would be a
riffle-shuffle, but it will need to be ascertained whether the spectator is able to perform it).
By now ribbon spreading the deck on the table, everyone will notice a series of different numbers, some
of them negative. The magician will then proceed to have them added together to obtain a new "random"
NUMBER: he will actually be secretly forcing NUMBER 39, due to a mathematical property of such cards
and the various redistributions and reversals involved in the procedure.
Taking note of the number 39, the magician will draw out the previously prepared deck of cards and, after
quickly displaying it, pretend to shuffle it quickly using, as before, one of the false shuffles in his repertoire
that is suitable for preserving the cyclic order of the deck, such as the false Greek shuffle. He will let the
spectator cut and complete the deck at will, after which' he will invite the spectator to raise it at any point
by lifting a portion of the cards. He will remove the bottom card from the pack he has lifted and turn it
face up, placing it on the table aligned with the top portion of the deck, which he will lay, leaving it face
down,, to the right of the remaining bottom portion, from which he will in turn take the top card (the one
where he has chosen to cut), to turn it over and place it aligned with this bottom portion of the deck, as
in the example shown in Fig. 4:

Figure 4
The conjurer will therefore explain that by his choice of where to cut the deck he has generated absolutely
randomly a new card, determined by the VALUE of the left card and the SUIT of the other card. In the
example of Fig. 4 this would therefore be the 10 of Hearts.
Reassembling the deck, overlaying as usual the left-hand portion on top of the other, letting the spectator
turn from the top of the deck exactly that "random" number of cards (39), he will arrive at the very card
indicated, to the general amazement!.
Impromptu Countdown
ACAAN
Effect:
A spectator is invited to shuffle at will a complete deck of 52 cards, which, before that, he can check at
will. When finished he will draw any CARD, showing it to the audience and declaring its value aloud, before
laying it on top of the deck, face down. The card will be lost in the deck by first relocating it to a random
position determined by the name of the card and then by visually cutting the deck into three packs and
completing the cut.
At that point the spectator will begin a series of countdowns, by counting down to ZERO, for three or four
times, and matching each number with a card turned face up and taken from the top of the deck. For each
pile of cards, he will stop whenever there is a coincidence between the countdown number and the value
of the card (if there is no coincidence, at ZERO that pile will be considered "burned") and he will eventually
move on to the next one.
At the end of the last countdown, a certain number of cards will remain in the spectator's hand and he
will be asked to add up the values of the cards now at the top of the stacks, those for which a random
coincidence with the countdown occurred. Having then obtained that NUMBER, the spectator himself will
begin to count the remaining cards one by one and, magically, will find himself holding the very card he
has chosen!

Setup:
This effect is totally IMPROMPTU and requires no preparation; the deck can even be borrowed and
shuffled freely! The only necessary condition required is that it must be complete with the 52 cards and
jokers are eventually drawn.

Performance (and Method):

After shuffling the deck, the spectator will freely draw any card, show it to everyone declaring its value,
and place it face-down at the top of the deck. The magician will explain that it must now be lost in the
deck as randomly as possible, and to begin with, since the name of the card itself was determined by
chance, the spectator will spell the card, matching each letter of its value with a card taken from the top
of the deck and stacked face-down on the table. When he has finished spelling out the value (e.g., Q U E
E N) he will drop the remaining cards en bloc on those just stacked and proceed to spell the word "O F" in
the same way by stacking the first two cards followed by the block of the remainder of the deck on them
laid down. Finally he will spell the suit (e.g., S P A D E S) by stacking the relevant number of cards and then
dropping the remaining ones on top of it in a single block, thus completing the complete spelling of the
card chosen just before.
At this point the card will surely have ended up somewhere in the lower portion of the deck, and in order
to further disperse it, the spectator will proceed to cut the deck in a singular manner: he will lift a first
block of cards from the top, turn it face up and lay it to the right of the remaining deck; he will then lift a
second portion of cards, flip them also in block to lay them to the right of the previous deck (Fig. 5) …

Figure 5
… and finally will also turn the remaining block of cards face up, leaving them on the far left.
He will then collect the three bundles in the usual way, that is, by placing the left bunch on top of the
middle one and the whole on top of the one on the far right, thus reassembling the deck, which will
immediately resume being turned face down.
Now the conjurer will announce that a similarly random NUMBER must be determined, and to do so, the
spectator will initiate some separate countdowns, all ending at ZERO.
- Assuming that the SUIT of the chosen card is CLUBS, HEARTS or SPADES there will be 4 Countdowns
from 10 to 0 and the magician will say that, in order to simplify and speed up the procedure, all pictures
will also be given the value of 10 (10, Jack, Queen, and King will be worth equally as 10).
- Only in the case that the SUIT is DIAMOND, the Countdowns will be just 3, instead of 4, but each one
from 13 to 0, and the magician will say that the pictures will worth their usual values: King=13, Queen=12
and Jack=11.
So, the spectator will then begin the first countdown, accompanying each number announced aloud with
a card taken from the top of the deck, turned face up to check its value, and stacked on the table. In case
there is no coincidence and the countdown comes to an end, as he pronounces ZERO he will lay the next
top card face-down on that stack, signifying that it is "burned." The same countdown will be repeated
three more times, returning a maximum of 4 cards to the top of each stack at the end (statistically it will
be at least two!).
These face-up card values at the top of the four stacks are to be added together (remembering to assign
the right values to all the picture cards), to then generate the random NUMBER whose finding was
announced just before.
For example, in Fig. 6, if the CARD chosen was the Queen of Spades, the NUMBER could be 25 (9+10+6):

Figure 6
As seen before, the conjurer will only have to remember the SUIT of the card that had been chosen and
based on this he will proceed in three different ways, two of which are very similar: in fact, while the word
"CLUBS" has only 5 letters and "HEARTS" and "SPADES" have 6 letters each,"DIAMONDS" have as many
as 8, and we will see how to proceed in each of these 3 cases:
- Assuming that, as in the most probable case, the suit of the chosen card is Spades or Hearts, the
magician will premise how only Magic could now cause that CARD to be exactly positioned AT THE
NUMBER just announced and will ask the spectator to count the cards from the top of the remaining deck
one by one, stopping him an instant before he turns over the CORRESPONDING card to summarize what
has been done so far and give maximum emphasis to the ending of the effect.
- In case it was Clubs instead, the illusionist will anticipate how only Magic could now cause that
chosen CARD to be in the deck exactly AFTER THAT NUMBER OF CARDS just announced and will ask the
spectator to count the cards from the top of the remaining deck one by one, stopping him an instant
before he turns over the NEXT card to summarize what has been done so far and give maximum emphasis
to the ending of the effect.
- In the case, however, that the card was Diamonds, the illusionist will behave exactly as in the first
case, making the same assumptions and stopping the spectator an instant before he turns the CARD
CORRESPONDENT to the NUMBER.
ACAAN For Tea Time
Effect:

The illusionist, after showing, shuffling and giving to cut, places a deck of cards in the spectator's hands.
He then asks him to divide it into three bunches, look at the CARD at the top of the middle one, memorize
it and disperse it into the bunch that will end up at the bottom, taking care however to shuffle it first, as
well as to shuffle the bunch from which it came.
Once the deck is reassembled, the spectator will only check that his card did not end up exactly at the
bottom, then he will be asked to indicate a number himself: no one will have a clear idea of where the
card may have ended up, but the magician will simply observe how it ended up in the bottom deck, so it
could be a position, say, between 30th and 40th and will therefore ask to choose a NUMBER included in
that range. The spectator will count that number of cards and, after making a magical gesture and turning
over the card, will incredibly find that very one chosen!

Setup:
For this effect, the magician will need a particular deck, prepared by making use of 2 identical decks
of cards: he will simply have to eliminate the Jokers and shuffle one of them well; then take the first
26 cards, discarding all the other 26 and replacing them with the same sequence of 26 cards taken
from the second deck. He will thus have composed an apparently normal deck of cards, similar to the
one shown in Fig. 7 (but actually consisting of two identical stacks of 26 cards), which he will place in
his case, ready for execution.

Figure 7
Performance (and Method):
After drawing the cards and showing them to the audience via a fan or a quick ribbon spread on the table,
the magician will perform a false shuffle that can keep their cyclic order intact, such as a Charlier Shuffle
or an Optical Shuffle or a Greek False Shuffle, and ask a spectator to cut the deck and complete. He will
then beg him to pick it up again and cut off roughly one-third of it, raising a first packet "A" which he will
lay on the table to his left, then cut the remaining packet roughly in half and lay the second packet "B" in
the center, followed by the remaining cards lifting them as a block into a final packet "C," placed on the
table to his far right, as shown in Fig. 8:

Figure 8
Now, after pointing out that no one could know the card at the top of the middle packet B, since the
viewer himself cut the shuffled deck, he will ask him to lift this very card, look at it surreptitiously from
you and memorize it, showing it to the audience as well. He will then have to lose it, placing it in the
middle of pack A, the one that used to be the top deck, and shuffling these cards between them at will.
To prevent the audience from thinking that the following cards are capable of providing any indication to
the mentalist, the spectator will be asked to shuffle the entire middle pack B as well.
As soon as he is satisfied, he will lay that same bundle on top of the lower bundle C, then gather them
together as a block to deposit them on the first bundle A (Fig. 9).
Figure 9
At this point the magician will point out how no one could now know where the spectator's chosen card
ended up, due to the various shuffles, but will only ask him to make sure, while he remains turned away,
that his card did not simply end up at the bottom of the deck.
In such an unlikely case, in order not to make the experiment trivial, he will ask him to take no more than
about 20 cards from the bottom of the deck and shuffle them thoroughly, avoiding a recurrence of the
anomaly that has just happened, and then place them back at the bottom of the deck.
However it goes, as soon as he faces the spectator again, the illusionist will ask him to put the deck face
down on the table, take the bottom card from it, to prevent them from thinking he has got a chance to
peek at it, and disperse it by raising a small pack of cards from the top and inserting it in its middle..
Now the spectator, having been premised that this is an “A.C.A.A.N." experiment, will be asked to point
to a random number at which to try to find the chosen card lost in the deck. This is not before the
magician has pointed out that since it has been scattered in the lower portion of the deck, it will most
likely be somewhere between 30th and 40th from the top. The viewer will then indicate at will a NUMBER
within that range (BETWEEN 30 and 40, EXTREMES EXCLUDED!).
Once he has announced the number, he will be asked to pick up the deck and lay down the cards, stacking
them one by one FACE DOWN on the table, while counting aloud from there to the chosen number.
Having reached that point, he will be asked to put away the rest of the cards and turn that last card face
up: as soon as he shows it, the conjurer will loudly announce its value, in a triumphant tone.
But both the viewer and the audience will be puzzled, NOT DEALING WITH CHOSEN CARD!
The magician, pretending not to understand, will again repeat aloud its value, suppose, for example, that
it is the 2 of Diamonds, and, faced with the audience's denial, will ask if it is not perhaps that card!
Sure enough, the spectator, or someone for him, will object that that is not the card and, once again, the
illusionist will say, "Isn't that the 2 of Diamonds?" and, without waiting for an answer, will immediately
add, "Is this card NOT THE TWO OF DIAMONDS?!".
Having clarified the misunderstanding that he will exploit as a gag, he will explain that he never intended
that to be the spectator's card... because he is aware of how very important it is, for any good Magic to
succeed, to be able to perform a magical gesture first!
In fact, at this point two different possible paths will open up, but both of which will allow the experiment
to be successfully completed.
It will all depend on the SUM OF THE 2 DIGITS OF THE CHOSEN NUMBER (which in the meantime the
magician will have had plenty of time to comfortably calculate and memorize) and the VALUE OF THE
CARD TURNED.
1) In the lucky case (with just under a 15% chance of occurrence) in which the two values coincide,
or the value of the card is less than only 1 point, the magician will point out how that card is
VERY IMPORTANT as an INDICATOR. The spectator will put down the card, pick up the deck he
had stacked on the table (reversing the order), and count aloud, starting at the top, that precise
number of cards indicated by the value of the card previously turned over.
If the value was 1 less than the sum, the magician will ask him at the end to turn over the
FOLLOWING CARD, otherwise he will turn over exactly the card at that number; in either case,
not before the mentalist has asked him to announce for the first time, aloud, which card he
chose.
2) In the second case, the magician will explain to the audience how in Magic it is not Mathematics
but Numerology that counts and, to demonstrate this, he will invite the spectator to pick up the
cards just stacked on the table, turning over on top and face down the card announced just
before. After recalling the chosen number, the two digits of which it is composed (i.e., tens and
units) will be pointed out and the magician will declare these rwo numbers to be relevant. He
will invite the spectator to form two new stacks, again taking cards from the top, each consisting
of that precise number of cards corresponding to the two digits of the chosen number (e.g., if
the number had been 37 he will stack first 3 and then 7 cards). Only at that point, while blatantly
performing any magical gesture (even if only by snapping his fingers), the magician will have the
name of the chosen card announced for the first time and, reminding everyone of the impossible
conditions of the experiment, the spectator having personally shuffled and chosen both the
number and the card, will ask them to turn over the FOLLOWING card, now at the top of the
deck.
In general amazement, it will be the very card of the spectator's choice!

The Secret:
After the spectator has chosen, dispersed his or her card and reassembled the three packs, the
DUPLICATE will find itself EXACTLY in 26th position from the top of the deck.
Having had the bottom card "burned," bringing it among the first ones by the expedient seen above, the
card counting procedure that follows will actually correspond to FORCING THE 27th CARD, that is, the
duplicate of the chosen card!
The fact that the spectator shuffles at will both the pile where he places his card and the one from which
it was taken, will make not only spectators but also a good number of magicians find it IMPOSSIBLE, and
they will certainly be amazed at the end of the experiment, as I have personally witnessed!
Credits and Acknowledgements:

For the first effect I made use of one of the many wonderful properties of the Si Stebbins stack, although
I wanted to use a variation of it (see also my VR STack PRO, explained and exploited in the effects
contained in “Contactless Automatic Card At Number: EBook #2” e in “S.E.M.P.E.R.”).
Another great source of continuous inspiration for me are Martin Gardner's books, especially the 5-
volume series: "Mathematical Puzzles and Diversions." To him I owe my passion for Mathematical Magic.
Last but not least, I always thank you, dear readers, whether professionals or amateurs, for your interest
and attention to this publication of mine.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you.
