Reading
9 Read the text. Choose the correct answer, A, B, C or D.

New York, New York… it’s a well-known name – so well known, in fact, that there have even
been songs written about it! But where does the name come from, and why is it called ‘New
York’ twice? Well, first things first. ‘New York’ is the name of both the city and the state in
which it is found. So, ‘New York, New York’ simply refers to the city of New York in the state of
New York. But don’t be fooled – New York City isn’t the capital of the state. That’s Albany – a
city located on the west bank of the Hudson River, around 220 km north of New York City.
New York and Albany are two of the oldest cities in the USA. Both of them were founded in
th
the 17 century by European settlers, although native Americans had already been living in
the area for thousands of years. In fact, the name of the oldest part of New York City – the
island of Manhattan – comes from the language of the native Lenni Lenape people, although
its exact meaning isn’t always agreed on.
The first recorded European to arrive in New York was an Italian explorer, Giovanni da
Verrazzano, who sailed into New York’s harbour in 1524. He was sailing a French ship, so he
named the area ‘Nouvelle Angouleme’, after the French King. It is thought that he met the
Lenape people, then left again to carry on his journey. Then, in 1609, the English explorer
Henry Hudson sailed up the river from the harbour while he was looking for a route to Asia
from Europe. The Hudson River, which also flows through New York, was named after him.
Hudson had been working for a Dutch trading company, and in 1614, Dutch traders returned
to the area. Ten years later, some Dutch families arrived and started building a fort. They
called it Fort Amsterdam, after the capital city of the Netherlands at that time. The whole area
became known as New Netherlands, and the city around the fort as New Amsterdam. After
several wars, the English took over the city in 1664 and changed its name to New York, after
King Charles’s brother, the Duke of York.
By that time, several other small Dutch towns had been established around New York. Since
then, they have been incorporated into New York City, but you can still see the Dutch
influence in some of their names, like Harlem (Haarlem) and Brooklyn (Breukelen). Today,
New York City is the biggest city in the USA, with over eight million people living there – and it
is estimated that over 800 different languages are spoken there!
