Trite Expressions

Trite expressions are worn-out, overused expressions. To make our


language lively, precise and convincing, we should avoid trite expressions.
Trite expressions have become unpalatable not only because they are out-
of-fashion but also because they are wordy. According to Frank Whitaker,
trite expressions spring from ‘mental laziness’ of the writer. Familiarity with
trite expressions or phrases enables us to identify if these have crept into
our speeches or writing unawares. Here are some examples of trite
expressions-

Exercise

Remove trite expressions

a. They were angry due to the fact that their plans had been discovered.
b. The company’s position with regard to overtime is made clear in their
contracts
c. The will was made two days prior to his death.
d. I am planning to open a business in the near future.
e. We will save money in order to buy a new house.
f. At the end of the day it is the students that suffer for unrest in the
campus.
g. After the success of his first book, the author thanked his publisher,
editor, and, last but not the least, his family.
